As the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) commemorates 60 years of academic excellence, innovation and transformation, the spotlight turns to the alumni who embody the University\u2019s legacy in practice. Among them stands Mr Thabo Utloa, whose journey from civil engineering student to respected industry leader reflects the enduring strength of a VUT education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Utloa is an Associate at SCIP Engineering Group and a Professional Civil Engineering Technologist and Project Manager with more than fifteen years of experience in the construction industry. His expertise spans the design and delivery of civil infrastructure projects, including roads, stormwater systems, water reticulation and sanitation infrastructure. Over the course of his career, he has led complex, multidisciplinary projects that demand both technical precision and strategic oversight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His leadership extends beyond the project site. As Chairperson of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) Vaal Branch and a member of the SAICE Water Engineering Division, Mr Utloa plays an influential role within the national engineering community. His commitment to shaping the profession is equally evident at VUT, where he serves as a moderator and Advisory Committee member for the Civil Engineering Department. Through these roles, he contributes to curriculum relevance, professional standards and the development of future engineers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Utloa completed his National Diploma and B.Tech in Civil Engineering at VUT before advancing his studies with a Master of Philosophy in Engineering Management. Reflecting on his formative years, he attributes much of his professional grounding to the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe principles we were taught at VUT are still relevant today,\u201d he reflects. \u201cThey shaped how I approach my work, how I solve problems, and how I lead projects. Those fundamentals have stayed with me throughout my career.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Mr Utloa, choosing VUT was both practical and purposeful. Raised in the Vaal region, he recognised the institution\u2019s strong technical reputation and its focus on applied learning. That combination, he says, prepared him not only to enter the industry but to thrive within it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the University marks six decades of contribution to national development, Mr Utloa\u2019s story illustrates the tangible impact of applied engineering education. His career reflects what VUT has consistently sought to produce over 60 years: graduates who are industry ready, ethically grounded and equipped to lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While affirming the University\u2019s strong academic foundation, he underscores the importance of continued institutional growth in governance, resourcing and operational efficiency to ensure that students are fully supported in realising their potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He speaks confidently about the current generation of students. \u201cThe students are capable. Those who are here deserve to be here. What is required is commitment, effort and the right mindset.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Mr Utloa, alumni engagement remains critical to sustaining the University\u2019s momentum. He believes mentorship is one of the most powerful tools for transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMentorship changes perspective,\u201d he explains. \u201cIf students understand why they are doing what they are doing, and how it connects to their future, it changes everything. Sometimes all it takes is someone who has walked the journey to say, \u2018It is possible.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As VUT celebrates 60 years of shaping minds and building industries, Mr Thabo Utloa\u2019s journey stands as a living testament to the institution\u2019s legacy. It is a story of resilience, applied knowledge and leadership in action.
