They set out to strengthen their community, promote healthy living and demonstrate the power of student leadership.

Led by the House Committee (HC), with support from the House Parent and residence students, the clean-up campaign transformed the residence into a hive of activity as students worked side by side to create a cleaner, healthier and more welcoming living environment.

The initiative brought together students, HC members and residence support staff around a common goal of promoting environmental responsibility, community pride and student unity.

According to HC member Mr Junior Mathebula, the campaign was designed not only to improve the physical environment but also to strengthen relationships among students.

“The main aim of the cleaning campaign was to keep the environment healthy and to bring students together. It creates an opportunity for students to interact, work as a team and make the residence a better place for everyone,” he said.

The campaign highlighted the value of teamwork and active participation, with students engaging with peers they might not ordinarily meet while working towards a common objective.

Mr Mathebula noted that initiatives such as these encourage students to become more involved in-residence life and build confidence through meaningful participation.

“Some students spend most of their time indoors. Activities like this encourage them to come out, participate and connect with others. It improves confidence, creates friendships and helps students feel more comfortable within the residence community,” he added.

For many participants, the most rewarding aspect of the day was witnessing students take ownership of their living environment and seeing first-hand what can be achieved when people work together.

HC member Ms Lesedi Kgobe said the campaign demonstrated the importance of collective action in creating a healthier and more welcoming environment.

“The most memorable part was seeing students come together and prove that it is possible to keep our environment clean. Working as a team allowed students to make new friends while contributing towards a healthier living space,” she said.

Organisers believe initiatives such as these contribute significantly to student wellbeing by fostering a sense of belonging and creating spaces where students feel proud of their surroundings.

Looking ahead, the HC hopes to make clean-up campaigns a regular feature of residence life. However, organisers highlighted the need for additional resources to support future initiatives.

Mr Mathebula explained that although student participation exceeded expectations, limited cleaning equipment posed a challenge.

“We had many students who wanted to participate, but the tools were limited. We had to share equipment, which slowed down the process. Additional resources would help us achieve even more in future campaigns,” he said.

He also encouraged University management to continue supporting student-led initiatives that contribute to leadership development, community building and positive residence culture.

The campaign received strong support from Phase 1 House Parent Ms Violet George, affectionately known by students as “Mama V”, who initiated the idea alongside the HC following their election.

“I wanted the newly elected HC to bring something positive to the residence community. I am grateful to the students for their positive response and participation. My wish is for our residence to become a place where students are proud to live and where others aspire to stay,” she said.

Ms George also appealed for continued institutional support, particularly regarding equipment and resources that would enable students to undertake similar projects more effectively in future.

The HC and Ms George extended their appreciation to Ms Matshidiso Sekete, Supervisor for Phase 2 Residence, Ms Faith Mocoancoeng, Welfare and Victim Empowerment Centre Manager, and Mr Babalo Nyhonyha, Acting Director: Student Accommodation and Catering, for their support. They also thanked those who provided refreshments that contributed to the success of the initiative.

The success of the campaign demonstrated how student-led initiatives can strengthen residence culture, promote environmental responsibility and create opportunities for meaningful student engagement.

As students continue to play an active role in shaping their living environment, the campaign serves as a reminder that leadership, teamwork and community spirit remain essential ingredients in creating a positive and enriching student experience at VUT.

“Phase 1 Residence students at the Vaal University of
