As the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) celebrates 60 years of Inspiring Thought and Shaping Talent, the achievements of its alumni continue to demonstrate the University’s enduring impact on society. Among these success stories is that of Mr Simamkele Masiza, whose journey from a passionate student-athlete to a member of South Africa’s football leadership structures reflects resilience, determination, and a commitment to excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally from Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape, Mr Masiza graduated from VUT with an Advanced Diploma in Sports Management. For him, pursuing a career in sport was never merely an academic choice. It was a calling rooted in a lifelong passion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I chose Sports Management with a purpose because it aligned with the passion I have for sports,” he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long before arriving at VUT, football had already become part of his identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I used to play football during lunch breaks from primary school through high school until my school shirt was soaked with sweat. Sport chose me, and I followed.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he arrived at VUT, that passion found a platform. Under the guidance of renowned coach Mr Stanley Nkoana, Mr Masiza developed both as a footballer and as a leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Coach Stanley Nkoana was a disciplinarian with a heart of gold,” he recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His years at the University were marked by memorable achievements that helped elevate VUT football on the national stage. As a key member of the team, Mr Masiza was part of the historic squad that reached the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 after defeating Premier Soccer League side Golden Arrows before taking on Mamelodi Sundowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also represented VUT at the University Sport South Africa (USSA) tournament, where he scored three goals and helped the team qualify for Varsity Football. His performances earned him recognition, including a Man of the Match award against the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflecting on those moments, Mr Masiza describes them as some of the highlights of his university experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Representing VUT and helping the team achieve milestones that had never been reached before are memories that I will always cherish.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While football occupied much of his time, Mr Masiza also embraced opportunities beyond the field. During his studies, he completed an internship at the University’s residence gym, where he<\/p>\n\n\n\n

gained valuable practical experience and life lessons that would later shape his professional journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The internship taught me that no matter how you feel, you must show up,” he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experience exposed him to sports operations, customer service, and managing diverse personalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It contributed immensely to my professional growth. I learned how to work with people from different backgrounds and developed skills that continue to help me today.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Balancing academics, sport, and work responsibilities taught him discipline, accountability, and time management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As a student-athlete, I learned the importance of commitment and time management. I was never late for training sessions and always communicated when academic commitments delayed me. Those experiences taught me responsibility, leadership, and teamwork.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like many successful individuals, Mr Masiza’s journey was not without setbacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduating, he continued pursuing his dream of playing professional football abroad. However, the road proved far more challenging than he had anticipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was a very bumpy and scrappy journey,” he admits. “At one point, I spent an entire year without playing football because I was frustrated and disappointed. I could not even watch football on television.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many, that might have marked the end of the dream. Instead, it became a turning point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“After that break, I told myself that I could still go overseas, but perhaps not as a player. I started researching and asking relevant people about other pathways into the game.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That decision would ultimately change the course of his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His persistence opened new opportunities within football administration and management. One of the most significant milestones came in 2025 when he was appointed Assistant Team Manager of South Africa’s Under-20 Men’s National Team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team went on to win the CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, a historic achievement for South African football. Although he was unable to travel with the team to the tournament, the appointment represented a major professional milestone and affirmed the value of perseverance and preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Mr Masiza continues to contribute to the growth and success of South African football, carrying with him the lessons, values, and experiences gained during his years at VUT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The opportunities I received at VUT helped me grow both as an athlete and as a professional. The University gave me the platform to develop my skills, build my confidence, and prepare for the future.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Masiza is currently part of the South African senior men’s national football team, Bafana Bafana, leadership structure attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament, further demonstrating the remarkable journey he has undertaken since his days as a VUT student-athlete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As VUT celebrates six decades of transforming lives through education, stories such as that of Mr Masiza serve as powerful reminders of the University’s impact. His journey embodies resilience,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

determination, and an unwavering pursuit of purpose, qualities that continue to inspire current and future generations of students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the University marks its 60th anniversary, Mr Simamkele Masiza stands as a proud example of how VUT continues to inspire thought, shape talent, and produce graduates who excel on national and international stages.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
