\n Newly appointed Executive Director: Operations and Logistics, Mr Rodney Matentshi, aims to transform VUT\u2019s campuses into living laboratories where innovation meets real-world solutions.\n <\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Vaal University of Technology\u2019s (VUT) buildings, infrastructure and technology should do more than support learning. They should become part of the learning experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the vision of the University\u2019s newly appointed Executive Director: Operations and Logistics, Mr Rodney Matentshi, who joined VUT on 1 August 2026. He wants to transform the University\u2019s campuses into living laboratories where students and researchers can test technologies, analyse performance and develop solutions to real-world challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe should create opportunities for academics and students to engage with the University\u2019s own infrastructure as a living lab,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concept could open opportunities for applied learning and research in renewable energy, smart buildings, water management, sustainability, artificial intelligence, facilities management and engineering innovation. It would also allow VUT to derive greater academic and research value from its infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Matentshi brings more than two decades of experience spanning higher education, mining and the built-environment sector. His expertise includes infrastructure planning, facilities management, capital and maintenance projects, professional services, governance and sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before joining VUT, he served at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and later occupied senior project management positions at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). His private-sector experience includes working at Lonmin, practising as an architectural professional and managing his own architectural practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He holds a Master of Architecture from Wits, a Postgraduate Diploma in Management specialising in Energy Leadership, a Bachelor of Technology in Architectural Technology and qualifications in interior design, construction law, contract management and project management. He also serves as a Council member at the University of Mpumalanga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Mr Matentshi, leading complex infrastructure programmes and multidisciplinary teams shaped a leadership philosophy grounded in accountability, collaboration and good governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cInfrastructure is ultimately about enabling people and institutional objectives,\u201d he said. \u201cMy vision is to build a responsive, efficient, sustainable and student-centred Operations and Logistics portfolio that enables the University\u2019s academic mission.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His immediate priority is to listen to stakeholders and develop a clear understanding of the portfolio\u2019s strengths, risks and opportunities. Key areas of focus will include infrastructure conditions, maintenance, service delivery, safety and security, project performance, governance and operational efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also intends to introduce clearer service standards, strengthen accountability and use data to identify and address operational bottlenecks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cService delivery must be built around the needs of our students, staff and broader University community,\u201d he said. \u201cMost importantly, I want to foster a culture of collaboration, ownership and continuous improvement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Matentshi acknowledges that ageing infrastructure, changing academic requirements, technological advances and financial constraints present significant challenges. However, he believes they also create an opportunity to reposition infrastructure as a strategic enabler of institutional transformation, innovation and student success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joining VUT during its 60th anniversary year, he said, carries both meaning and responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSixty years represents a remarkable institutional legacy and an opportunity to reflect on how far VUT has come while looking confidently towards the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the coming years, Mr Matentshi wants VUT to become a modern, safe, sustainable and technology-enabled University where the campus itself serves as an active laboratory for innovation and applied research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy message is one of partnership, collaboration and shared purpose,\u201d he said. \u201cOperations and Logistics belongs to the entire University, and its success depends on working closely with our students, academics, professional and support staff, management and external partners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As VUT enters its next chapter, Mr Matentshi\u2019s vision places infrastructure at the heart of institutional progress, not merely as the physical foundation of the University, but as a living platform for learning, discovery and innovation.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
