\n Learners take part in a hands-on practical activity during VUT\u2019s WiPiSA workshop, exploring physics and technology while gaining valuable experience.\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Young women with aspirations in science were encouraged to see physics not as an intimidating academic discipline, but as a gateway to a world of opportunities during a Women in Physics in South Africa (WiPiSA) engagement hosted by the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) on 17 September 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organised by the Department of Applied Physical Sciences in the Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences, VUT’s first WiPiSA departmental lunch brought together Grade 12 learners from Ho\u00ebr Tegniese Skool Carel De Wet and Tshepong Secondary School for a day of mentorship, career guidance and inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative sought to broaden learners’ understanding of physics and to encourage more young women to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), particularly in fields where women remain underrepresented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leading the discussions was Dr Katekani Shingange, Chairperson of WiPiSA, who challenged learners to embrace their curiosity, define their goals and pursue their ambitions with confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour curiosity belongs in physics,\u201d said Dr Shingange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her message set the tone for the day as she encouraged learners to view physics as a field with limitless possibilities rather than a narrowly defined discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The session explored the diverse career paths available to physics graduates, including opportunities in medical physics, engineering, banking and finance, research and academia, energy and environmental sciences, and aerospace industries. Learners were shown how physics underpins many of the innovations and technologies that shape modern society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Shingange urged the learners to approach their futures with purpose and determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou do not have to have it all figured out yet, but the moment you enter university premises, be sure of what you want,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawing on the well-known saying, \u201cThe journey of a thousand miles begins with one step,\u201d Dr Shingange encouraged learners to dream boldly, seek support when challenges arise and remain intentional about their academic and personal development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also highlighted the importance of transforming theoretical knowledge into practical solutions that address real-world challenges, emphasising that the future of science depends on young people who are willing to innovate and contribute meaningfully to society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussion was further enriched by lecturers from various disciplines within the Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences, who shared their personal and professional journeys. Reflecting on the challenges they had faced throughout their studies and careers, they spoke candidly about overcoming obstacles, navigating difficult environments and remaining focused on their goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
