The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) hosted its annual Academic Advising Transition Workshops, facilitated by the Academic Advising team within the Centre for Academic Development and Student Counselling and Support. This program was specifically designed to support the 2024 cohort of new students, offering a comprehensive agenda aimed at ensuring a smooth transition as they embark on their academic journeys.
The students received a warm welcome from Mr. Mothusi Samosamo, CAD Learning Development Coordinator, Academic Advisors from all four VUT faculties, Student Counselling and Support and first-year academic coordinators during the introductory session. A collaborative tone, fostering a sense of community among all attendees, was physical, from the meticulous organization of the session to its seamless execution.
“A pivotal aspect of academic success lies in effective semester planning and a comprehensive understanding of the academic language utilized within higher education institutions,” said Mr Samosamo. Throughout this segment, participants delved into various crucial elements necessary for mapping out a successful academic path. From familiarizing themselves with university terminology to comprehending course and module requirements, attendees gained invaluable insights into the academic landscape. Additionally, essential policies pertaining to course cancellation and progression rules were outlined, ensuring that students were well-informed and equipped to make educated decisions regarding their academic pursuits.
During each faculty session, students were provided with an in-depth understanding of Academic Advising (AA) and its profound significance in shaping academic outcomes. Through interactive sessions, students acquired knowledge about student learning outcomes and effective strategies in academic advising, empowering them to confront challenges and capitalize on opportunities throughout their academic journey. Furthermore, the referral system was elucidated, offering students access to additional support and resources whenever necessary.
Acknowledging the significance of holistic student support, the workshops featured a session led by different speakers from the Student Support Services (SSS) Department, focusing on student counselling and support. This segment addressed social awareness and relationship skills, aiming to equip students with essential life skills beyond the confines of academia. By fostering a supportive environment and encouraging open dialogue, students gained valuable insights into personal growth and well-being, foundational pillars for academic success.
Feedback comments from the students were as follows:
