On 11 September 2024, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), through its Centre for Academic Development, hosted the prestigious R.A.T.E (Recognition of Academic Teaching Excellence) Awards Ceremony at the Riverside Sun Hotel. This gala dinner event was a highlight of the three-day Teaching and Learning Conference, aimed at celebrating and advancing innovation in education.
The R.A.T.E Awards Ceremony brought together key stakeholders from across the university to recognise and honour the exemplary contributions of academics who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to teaching excellence and student success. The evening celebrated those who have not only excelled in the classroom but also inspired transformative learning and personal growth among students.
Prof. Chengedzai Mafini, the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Teaching, Learning and Quality at VUT set the tone with a motivational address emphasising the evolving role of educators in shaping the future of education. “As educators, we are more than just transmitters of knowledge—we are architects of change,” he remarked, encouraging the audience to continue innovating in their teaching practices.
In his message of support, Prof. Khehla Ndlovu, VUT Vice Chancellor and Principal, highlighted the importance of teaching excellence as a cornerstone of the university’s mission, adding that they recognise the transformative power of education in building sustainable and inclusive societies.
