The Class of ’93 from Rantsane Secondary School, in partnership with the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Alumni team, revisited the school which is based in Qwa-Qwa in the Free State province.
Knowing the challenges that were faced by their parents and compelled by their own experiences when they were still learners, the Class of ’93 took it upon themselves to identify learners who lack basic school necessities (with the help of the teachers) and delivered gift packs and soccer balls to the school on 3 September.
The VUT Alumni team has over several years committed itself to assisting in many different schools in this regard. Kediemetse Mokotsi, Director Marketing and Public Relations, informed the learners of the importance of branding and highlighted that it is most important for them to give the school a 100% pass rate, but that behavior and attitude will determine their future.
She also extended an invitation to the school to attend the annual STEM event hosted by VUT for young girls wanting to venture into Science, Technology, Engineering or Management careers.
The Principal of the school, Mr Segogo Molete said no monetary value can repay what both VUT and the Class of ’93 have done. With their contributions, they are planting a seed and he understands that they are pushed by something inside them – the realisation that the community can only grow by people making the necessary contributions where needed. It is the class of 2018’s aims to achieve a 100% pass rate and thus attain a good university entrance. “The school currently has 15 girls who are excelling in Mathematics, with 90% passes on the subject” he said.
Mr Elvis Motloung, one of the Class of ’93 learners, pledged to buy the school a soccer and netball kits, encouraged the students to focus on their books and get good grades and closed off with a promise that this contribution is only a start and they will come back to do more.
