VUT ANNOUNCES THE APPOINTMENT OF A NEW CHANCELLOR

The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Vincent Zwelibanzi Mntambo as its new Chancellor for the next five years, effective from 11 September 2023.
Mntambo’s early career includes lecturer and later senior lecturer positions at the then University of North West (UNW), the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) and the University of South Africa (UNISA) where he inspired many students in the fields of Constitutional Law, International Law and Jurisprudence.
His problem solving and negotiation capabilities guided him in successfully leading the Independent Mediation Service of South Africa (IMSSA), an NGO which specialised in the resolution of industrial conflict. In that role he led the establishment of a division which helped resolve community and political conflicts in the period leading up to SA’s democracy in 1994.
He subsequently served as the first Director General of the Gauteng Provincial Government where he left an indelible mark as a people-centred change leader.
On the business front, Mntambo’s success track record includes being founder and Director of Sediba Consulting, Eyesizwe Mining and Exxaro Ltd. His other chairmanship roles included the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration; Eyesizwe Mining; Metrobus; South African Tourism, and the Paleontological Scientific Trust.
His qualifications include B.Iuris; LL.B (UNW)and LL.M (Yale).
Commenting on his appointment Mr. Mntambo said: “This appointment is an honor and a privilege. A testimony and culmination of years of service in academia, civic duty, leadership roles in the public and business sector. I trust that I bring to this institution, the right mix of skills and experiences that will markedly advance the vision of this esteemed institution. VUT carries the hopes and aspirations of many in society. It carries the duty to empower the next generation of young leaders who must advance the interests of society through technological innovation, excellence, and inclusive growth”.
The VUT Acting Vice Chancellor and Principal, Dr Dan Mokoena described Mntambo’s appointment as testimony to the confidence and trust that members of VUT community have in his ability to contribute positively to the well-being and advancement of the VUT.
Chair of the VUT Council, Professor Mandlakhe Radebe also congratulated Mr Mntambo on his appointment and pointed out that his outstanding qualifications make him an ideal fit for the esteemed role of the University’s titular head. “His distinguished background positions him to serve as a dedicated ambassador for the University, advocating for VUT’s interests and enhancing its visibility on both national and international fronts. Leveraging his extensive experience in both the public and private sectors, Mr. Mntambo brings a wealth of valuable networks to support his responsibilities in this capacity,” said Radebe.
