Recently, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) successfully conducted an emergency fire drill at the Vanderbijlpark and Sebokeng student residences. The drill was a critical exercise aimed at evaluating the preparedness and responsiveness of our student community in the event of a fire emergency. The focus was on assessing the effectiveness of evacuation procedures, communication systems, and overall emergency response mechanisms.
The exercise was planned and executed by the Occupational Health and Safety Department, with vital support from Safety, Healthy and Environment (SHE) Representatives, First Aiders, Campus Clinic Paramedics, Fire Marshals, Students Representative Council (SRC), and Protection Services. A high-volume handheld alarm initiated the evacuation, signaling students to vacate the designated buildings immediately. The drill was designed to measure the efficiency of the evacuation process, adherence to safety protocols, and the level of compliance with instructions by the residents.
The results of the drill were commendable. It took just nine (9) minutes and two (2) seconds to evacuate all students to the designated emergency assembly points. Upon arrival, a roll call was conducted to ensure everyone was accounted for, and shortly after, an “All clear” message was communicated, allowing students and staff to return to their residences and offices.
This emergency evacuation drill provided valuable insights into our current level of preparedness. It highlighted both the strengths and the areas where improvements are needed. Moving forward, we remain committed to addressing these challenges, continuously enhancing the safety and emergency response capabilities within our student residences.
The safety of our students and staff remains a top priority at VUT, and such drills are a crucial part of our ongoing efforts to ensure a secure and well-prepared campus environment.
