The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) hosted the Residence Academic Awards ceremony on Thursday, 15 November 2018 at Stonehaven. This ceremony is testimony to the fact that the Residence Living and Learning Department lives up to its mandate of ensuring a living environment conducive to learning. Its performance is monitored by producing students who are excelling academically.
Pastor Esther Msibi opened the ceremony and welcomed everyone by saying: “Wow! Out of thousands of students living in VUT residences it’s only you who qualify to come today. On your graduation day your whole class may be there, but the difference is that you refuse to be average students. Average is an enemy of exceptional excellence in academics. So, thank you.”
Mr Vincent Mduli; HCT Counsellor, expressed a word of encouragement to the students and said: “A person who overcomes a great test to becomes the greatest, because we all want to be great but when we encounter a great test, we run away.” He continued to say that students are the light of the University and thanked them for the sacrifices they have made. He said to the students they are the ones who are going to come up with solutions and that they should think out of the box and work smart.
Certificates were awarded to the top 20 students from different VUT residences in various faculties. Laptops were awarded to the top four students namely: G Mabala (86%); N.P Mashaba (91%); N.F Mahlangu (87%); and T Thabedi (90%).
Residence life officer Mr Pakiso Tjotjo said to the award-winning students that they should thrive to be employers not employees. He added that they should expect challenges in life.
In closing, programme director Mr Peter Rasaha said that students should not relax now that they have been awarded prizes.
DJ Ntsikoe entertained the crowd with his awesome jams.
