On 27 August 2024, the Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT) hosted an Open Day for the Jet Nteo Commerce and Entrepreneurship School of Specialisation (SoS).
Jet Nteo SoS is the first Entrepreneurship School in the Emfuleni Municipality and the 28th School of Specialisation.
This event brought together 28 students from the Jet Nteo SoS accompanied by two educators, providing them with a unique opportunity to know more about the learning environment and resources available at VUT.
The event was thoughtfully organized by lecturers from the Accountancy Department, including Mr. Letshaba Sejake, who also served as the motivational speaker for the day. In his address, Mr. Sejake congratulated the attendees for making it this far, reminding them that many are called, but very few are chosen. “So, whenever it’s hard, I always remember Mary Mary’s song “I Cannot Give Up Now – you are almost there; it’s just a last push,” he said.
The open day began with an information session where students were presented with the many academic programs, career pathways, and opportunities available in the field of commerce. Faculty members and the student recruitment team shared beneficial information about the many courses available, emphasizing the importance of specialized education in developing future business leaders and professionals. They also underlined the necessity of enrolling in universities on time to ensure that students have the best academic and career development chances.
“You have an opportunity now to choose what you want in life. So, imagine yourself 10 years from now, what will you be doing, and will you be enjoying it because that is very important. We are here to help you make that decision, but we are not going to make that decision for you.” said Dr. Innocent Mudhombo, Acting HOD of Accountancy in his opening remarks.
Furthermore, another lecturer and one of the organisers of the event, Mr. Lungisani Buthelezi shared a Chinese proverb that translates, “Teachers can open the door, but you must enter it yourself,” emphasizing the significance of personal initiative and accountability in education.
Following the presentations, learners were taken on a guided tour of the campus which gave them personal exposure to the university’s vibrant academic environment, allowing them to better understand university life. This event not only shared useful knowledge but also inspired the learners to pursue higher education. Their interaction with the faculty provided them with a taste of the opportunities available to them at VUT, motivating them to strive for greater success in their academic activities. We wish them all the best for their upcoming examinations.
