VUT SCIENCE WEEK CONTRIBUTES TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCIENTISTS
By Puleng Maphisa – 31 July 2023
Science Week is a wonderful period dedicated to celebrating and promoting the realms of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education and Research. The essence of Science Week lies in enhancing scientific literacy, igniting interest in STEM fields, cultivating a spirit of inquiry and curiosity, and highlighting the profound impact of science on our daily lives.
This year, the Vaal University of Technology’s Department of Biotechnology and Chemistry, operating under the Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences, warmly invited several high schools around Vaal to partake in the 2023 theme, “Transforming lives through evidence-based science.”
Dr Kgomotso Mtshatsheni, Chair Host of Science Week, emphasized the necessary role that Science Week plays in inspiring the next generation of scientists and cultivating an enlightened and scientifically aware society. During the event, she showcased the significance of the scientific instruments employed within their departments. Joining her was Professor Christina Grobler, Faculty Dean, and Professor Joe Modise, Head of Biotechnology and Chemistry, who both extended a warm welcome to the learners and encouraged them to strive for excellence, aiming for a place in their esteemed Faculties.
One remarkable attendee, Montsho Kamohelo Blessing, a grade 10 learner from Iketsetseng Comprehensive School said he attended the event to seek knowledge, an understanding of his challenges, and the means to overcome them. His experience at VUT exceeded his expectations, leaving him feeling more informed, and enriched with newfound knowledge. He conveyed his intent to use the insights gained for his future aspirations, aiming to pursue studies in Mine Engineering while also developing a strong interest in Chemistry and the thrill of discovery.
The VUT Science Week will run from 31st July until 5th August 2023. Wishing the aspiring Engineers and Scientists the best of luck and applauding their dedication to shaping a brighter future.
