On 9 September 2024, the Student Christian Organization (SCO) of Vaal University of Technology (VUT) hosted a special Alumni Sunday Church Service at the Desmond Tutu Hall. The event brought together current students and a significant number of VUT alumni, including former SCO executive members, for a time of fellowship, reflection, and worship.
The service commenced with Mr. Lindokuhle Mayford Sothoane, the SCO Deputy President of 2021 and President of 2022/2023, leading a special offering, to which the congregation responded generously. This was followed by a warm welcome by Ms. Michelle Masasane, the current serving President of the SCO for 2023/2024. In her opening address, Ms. Masasane spoke passionately about the importance of the event: “Today we gather not only to reflect on the past but also to express our profound appreciation. As we come together for this special alumni service, we are reminded of the transformative power of faith, fellowship, and commitment. Our organization has always been more than just a campus ground. It has been a guided community where lifelong friendships are forged, where personal growth is nurtured, and where the seeds of future leadership are formed.”
The keynote sermon was delivered by Pastor Sandile Mthembu, who also served in the SCO during his time at VUT, holding key positions as the Deputy Chairperson in the Preachers Department and the SCO Chairperson of Gauteng Province. Pastor Mthembu’s message focused on the enduring impact of faith in leadership, both in spiritual and professional spheres.
The service not only honored the legacy of the SCO at VUT but also served as an inspiring platform for current members to connect with alumni who had once stood in their shoes. One of the alumni, Bonolo Mmola, shared his reflections:
“The SCO and such services in particular are enriching because they remind one of where they come from. Not only that, they also serve as a platform for sharing knowledge while exchanging experiences. I hope we have more of these services in the future.”
The event emphasized the lasting impact of the SCO on the lives of students, fostering a sense of community and spiritual growth that transcends the years spent on campus. With the success of this year’s Alumni Sunday Service, many look forward to seeing this become an annual tradition that strengthens the bonds between past and present members of the organization.
The SCO at VUT continues to be a cornerstone of faith and leadership development, a place where future leaders are nurtured, and a community of support is built.
