On the 31 August 2024, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) made headlines by hosting its first-ever Varsity Pride event, a powerful statement of the university’s commitment of inclusivity and diversity.
Organised by the Institutional HIV/Aids Unit (IHAU) at the Isak Steyl Stadium, the event drew participation of over six hundred (600) students, staff, and community members, who gathered to show their support for the queer community. Notably, this much anticipated gathering also drew the support of representatives from three other higher education institutions: University of Pretoria (UP), Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), and North-West University (NWU)’s Mafikeng Campus, as well as a delegation from the Gender Practitioners Community of Practice (CoP).
Primarily, the event aimed to provide a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community and allies to come together, share their experiences, and celebrate their identities without fear of discrimination or prejudice. The day featured a variety of engaging activities, including impactful speeches and lively performances that highlighted the vibrancy and resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Another key aspect of the event was the collaboration with the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, whose presence reinforced their commitment to ensuring safe spaces for all individuals, both within the educational sector and the larger community.
Overall, the VUT Varsity Pride was more than just a day of celebration; it was a catalyst for change within the university community. IHAU in collaboration with student organisations have pledged to continue their efforts in promoting inclusivity on campus. While emphasising the importance of such initiatives in higher education institutions, many have described the event as not just about celebrating diversity; but about creating an environment where everyone feels they belong, where differences are embraced, and where every student can thrive.
This is an extension of other available mechanisms at VUT which demonstrates the university’s dedication to creating a more inclusive and equitable space. These include the institution’s Integrated Transformation Plan (ITP) and the VUT Gender Based Violence, LGBTQIA+, Unfair Discrimination and Harassment Policy. Both these, place emphasis on social inclusion, safety, and cohesion.
With rainbow flags in the air, colorful attire, and chanting of slogans that promote equality and love, this successful VUT Varsity Pride 2024 has set a positive precedent for future initiatives.
