VUT Young Women Empowerment Seminar fosters sense of community and solidarity among female students

Recently, the Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT) Institutional HIV/AIDS Unit (IHAU) displayed its commitment to empowering young women within the university by hosting the Young Women Empowerment Seminar at the VUT Lapa. The event, themed “Your Story Matters,” served as a platform for engaging in meaningful discussions on various issues relevant to young women’s lives.
The seminar brought together a diverse collection of voices and perspectives, addressing critical topics such as relationships, politics, business, gender-based violence (GBV), mental health, and sexual and reproductive health. Each discussion was designed to provide the participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to navigate these complex aspects of life with ease.
Among the esteemed speakers was Ms Mmamuso Pitso, a Social Worker from Families South Africa (FAMSA) who provided relationships advice. She emphasised the importance of self-acceptance, encouraging young women not to allow anyone to change them but to embrace change on their terms. Ms Pitso also highlighted the need for mutual acceptance and support in relationships, urging participants to acknowledge and support their partner’s past, present, and future.
Ms Rayner Seabi, the Umkhonto Wesizwe Youth League Convener at Sebokeng East, addressed the topic of women in politics. She passionately articulated that young women today must be heard and advocate for inclusive political diversity. She stated, “The political future of women lies in the hands of women,” underlining women’s role in shaping their political destiny.
On the topic of women in business, Ms Nokuthula Mazibuko, Attorney and Managing Director at N. Mazibuko Incorporated, shared her insights on the importance of self-worth. She advised the attendees to respect others regardless of their titles and emphasised that the possibilities are endless when women gather and connect. Ms Mazibuko encouraged the women to be their cheerleaders and explore opportunities beyond their comfort zones.
Another speaker of the day, Ms Kholiwe Maduna who is a Victim Assistant Officer at the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)’s Thuthuka Wellness Centre, led a crucial discussion on Gender-Based Violence (GBV). She provided clear guidelines on the aspects of GBV that must be reported, helping the participants understand the severity of such incidents and the importance of taking action. Her presentation highlighted the need for vigilance and support in combating GBV within our communities.
Ms Boipelo Masetlhe, a Professional Nurse specialising in Sexual Reproductive Health at Johan Heyns Hospital in Vanderbijlpark also took to the podium to speak on the importance of sexual health and reproduction. She advised the women to be vigilant about their health and to use contraceptives as a means of safeguarding their well-being.
Finally, Dr. Carmel Ramiah, a Specialist Psychiatrist at Sedibeng District Health Services- Johan Heyns Community Health Centre, addressed the topic of mental health. She provided an overview of different mental health issues and shared practical advice on managing them, including the benefits of exercise, meditation, and open communication. Dr Ramiah encouraged the attendees to look out for one another and support women needing mental health care, closing with the powerful reminder that “to strengthen a woman is to empower another.”
The seminar aimed to empower young women and foster a sense of community and solidarity by focusing on these essential themes. It allowed participants to share their experiences, learn from one another, and gain insights from experts across various fields.
This event is a testament to VUT’s ongoing commitment to the well-being and development of young women, ensuring they are equipped with the tools and resources necessary to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.
