Workshop enhances student leaders’ skills to lead effectively

The Department of Student Life and Governance at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) recently organized a comprehensive training workshop aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of treasurers and secretaries from the more than fifty student-led structures that cover a wide range of interests and activities on campus – including social, cultural, religious, political, and academic. This initiative underscores VUT’s commitment to fostering effective student leadership and governance.
With presentations from various departments within the university, the primary objective of the workshop was to equip student leaders with the necessary tools and knowledge to manage their roles effectively.
Dr Trishana Soni, Acting Director of Student Life and Governance set the scene by giving a perspective on student governance. This, she said, ensures that students have a voice in decision-making processes, can engage in meaningful activities, and have access to resources that enhance their academic and personal growth.
Ms Nomonde Socikwa from Procurement Department shared with the delegates, important financial literacy tips, including proper budgeting, responsible expenditure, as well as planning. She also gave a detailed presentation on various institutional financial and procurement processes of the university, as well as implications in a case of misconduct.
To highlight the important role of effective communication in student leadership, was Mr. Dumile Mlambo, Head of Corporate Communications Department at VUT. He emphasised that at the heart of student leadership, is forging meaningful partnerships and collaborations with various bodies; both on and off campus – something which he said required succinct communication. In addition to sharing basic effective communication tips, Mlambo also took the delegates through the University’s social media Policy which he said is designed not only to lay down the fundamental guidelines for protecting the image and reputation of VUT across social media platforms, but that it also aims to promote responsible social media activity by all.
Ms Tisch Farrell, the Marketing and Brand Manager, gave a presentation on the importance of brand identity and protecting the institution’s image, adding that everyone associated or with or who identified with VUT, is an important university brand ambassador.
Another notable presentation of the day was by Mr Clifford Mopedi, Manager of the Judicial Services Department who took the audience through the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act and confidentiality their alignment to the institution.
Overall, the workshop was a great success, as it left attendees with a great sense of purpose, equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make a positive impact on campus.
