With a wealth of experience in strategic planning, institutional governance, and higher education operations, Ms Rathopo takes this role critically as VUT continues to navigate transformation and innovation within the sector.A seasoned professional, Ms Rathopo holds a BCom degree in Informatics and Economics from the University of Pretoria, a Postgraduate Diploma from UNISA, and a Master's in Business Leadership (MBL) from UNISA: School of Business Leadership. Strengthening Environmental Research Through Strategic CollaborationFrom 12 to 14 May 2025, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has the honour of hosting a high-level collaborative event between the South African Weather Service (SAWS), the Southern African Mercury Network (SAMNet), and Nippon Instruments Corporation (Japan). This strategic partnership is focused on advancing mercury monitoring, environmental research, and skills development in South Africa.The three-day programme began with Installation Day, followed by a handover ceremony and student training sessions, and will conclude with training on sample handling and mercury analysis techniques. Central to the event is the installation and demonstration of the MA-3000 Direct Mercury Analyzer, a state-of-the-art tool that enhances VUT’s research infrastructure and provides practical, hands-on learning for students and staff.This collaboration is aligned with the objectives of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, which seeks to protect human health and the environment from the harmful effects of mercury. A formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is also underway, laying the foundation for sustained partnership and mutual growth in scientific research and technology exchange.This initiative is led by Professor Michael Klink of the Faculty of Applied and Computer Science (FACS).
