Student Support Services (SSS) at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has taken a bold step in shaping the future of entrepreneurship by launching the Student Entrepreneur Series: Business, Leadership and Innovation. The strategic planning workshop took place on 15 May 2025 and marked a milestone in the university’s efforts to foster a culture of innovation and leadership among its students.

Ms Matshepo Rathebe, Science and Technology Commercialisation Coordinator at the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) and Economic Activation Officer, welcomed attendees and outlined the purpose of the initiative. The workshop aimed to equip student entrepreneurs with essential knowledge in business management, leadership development and creative problem-solving. It encouraged students to develop a strategic mindset that enables them to start and scale their ventures, drive innovation, and lead effectively in their chosen industries.

Ms Happy Makhumalo Ngidi, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) of Proudly South African, highlighted the organisation’s role in promoting local procurement in both public and private sectors. The goal is to stimulate local production and encourage consumers to support homegrown brands. This approach contributes to job creation and aligns with national efforts to revive the economy, reduce unemployment and promote sustainable development. Proudly South African’s mission is anchored in the National Development Plan and the Local Procurement Accord signed in October 2011.

She remarked, “Today’s South African is not just surviving; they are building brands, creating a future and leaving a legacy. It starts with you being an entrepreneur who is supremely organised, intentional and focused, rather than a general dealer.”

The event also featured a powerful panel discussion with Mr Seati Moloi, CEO of Khoi Tech; Mr Dumisani Mahlangu, CEO and founder of Chepa Streetwear; and Ms Mel Tlapi, CEO and founder of Soweto Travel Shop. The panellists shared their entrepreneurial journeys and real-world insights into building businesses in South Africa.

They emphasised that “success is shaped by your environment, and it is the youth who drive meaningful change in the country. Your mind is your most powerful engine, so start that business, persevere until you see it through and unlock your greatest dreams. Surround yourself with positive influences, believe in your potential and remember that the future belongs to those who are bold enough to create it.” The day ended on a high note with a vibrant fashion show presented by Mr Prince Mashamba under his brand Above The Law of Clothing, showcasing an eclectic mix of stylish apparel worn by student models.
