On 7 April 2025, Ms Ndzalama Baloyi proudly crossed the graduation stage to receive her Diploma in Information Technology (IT) from the Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT). More than just a graduate, Ms Baloyi served as the Student Representative Council (SRC) Officer for Legal, Policy and Constitutional Affairs, advocating for students and ensuring their voices were heard throughout her academic journey.
Born in Giyani, Limpopo and raised in Pretoria, Ms Baloyi is a proud pastor’s daughter and the only girl among three siblings. Her path has not been easy, but it is one marked by resilience, leadership and purpose. Reflecting on her early days at university, she said, “When I came to VUT, I struggled a lot during my first year, especially with accommodation. But the SRC members helped me navigate that, and I thought, if they can help me, I can also assist others.” That spark of gratitude ignited a deep commitment to student leadership, leading her to serve as Primerious of Meloding Residence and Deputy Chairperson of the Central Housing Committee (CHC).
Graduation day itself was not without its challenges. “I had anxiety walking that stage because I can’t walk in heels,” she laughed. “Plus, so much happened that morning, my parents were running late because they were attending a funeral in Limpopo. But I thank God, they made it in time.”
Her passion for IT was inspired by her older brother, who opened her eyes to the field’s broad and exciting opportunities. “He told me how broad IT is, which inspired me,” she explained.
Baloyi’s role in the SRC brought its own set of challenges. “Transitioning from being an ordinary student to an SRC member is hard because now every student contacts you for assistance. During registrations, you’re on the ground helping students with all sorts of issues, it’s intense but very rewarding.”
One of her most difficult periods came in 2022, when her mother was hospitalised for nearly six months. As the only daughter, Ms Baloyi often travelled between campus and Pretoria to care for her, all while continuing her studies. During that same time, her older brother was also in rehabilitation. Yet, despite these personal hardships, she remained determined and focused on her goals.
Looking ahead, Ms Baloyi has no intention of slowing down. “From here, I am pursuing my Advanced Diploma in IT. I also want to complete my postgraduate and master’s degrees. I got so motivated on my graduation day,” she said, her eyes lighting up.
Ms Ndzalama Baloyi is more than a graduate, she is a symbol of strength, compassion and unwavering dedication. Her journey reminds us that with faith, purpose and determination, even the most difficult paths can lead to extraordinary success.
