For Ms Pertunia Ntombizodwa Shabalala, a postgraduate student in Information Technology (IT) at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), the opportunity to study at Aalen University in Germany through the Baden-Württemberg Scholarship (BWS) has been a life-changing experience. As she approaches the end of her winter semester 2024/2025, she reflects on the challenges, triumphs, and personal growth she has experienced.
Arriving in Germany was a mixture of excitement and adjustment. The efficiency of public transport, the breathtaking landscapes, and the structured daily life presented a fascinating contrast to home. However, one of the biggest hurdles was the language barrier. “At first, it was daunting, but over time, I learned to navigate conversations, pick up common phrases, and immerse myself in the culture,” says Ms Shabalala.
Simple tasks like grocery shopping, reading public signs, and forming connections with locals became significant milestones in her journey. Each challenge she overcame added to her confidence, proving that adaptability and perseverance are key to thriving in a new environment.
Pursuing a master’s in information technology in Germany has been both demanding and rewarding. The coursework required deep analytical thinking and rigorous problem-solving, pushing her beyond her comfort zone. “The research component allowed me to explore the intricacies of technology, security, and digital privacy—topics that have always intrigued me,” she explains.
Collaborating with professors and fellow students from diverse backgrounds was an eye-opening experience. The late-night coding sessions, hands-on projects, and research tasks were challenging, yet they reinforced her passion for technology. The frustration of debugging stubborn code was always outweighed by the joy of completing a project or presenting research findings.
Germany became more than just a place of study; it became a second home. Ms Shabalala embraced cultural exchange activities, explored attractive cities, and made lifelong friends. “From spontaneous road trips to Christmas markets, every experience added to the richness of my time here,” she says.
Volunteering at university events helped her connect with others and contribute to the community. “I still cherish the moments spent decorating for events, assisting fellow students, and sharing laughter over simple things. These memories remind me of the warmth and kindness I encountered despite being far from home.”
Of course, the journey was not without its difficulties. Homesickness, academic pressures, and moments of self-doubt were part of the experience. However, resilience and a strong support system helped her push through. “I found strength in the friendships I formed, in self-reflection, and in reminding myself why I started this journey in the first place.”
As her time in Germany draws to a close, Ms Shabalala reflects on how much she has grown, both personally and professionally. “The knowledge I have gained, the friendships I have built, and the memories I have created will stay with me forever.”
Her journey has shaped her into a more confident, skilled, and open-minded individual, ready to take on the future with enthusiasm. “Germany has not just been a place of study; it has been a home, a teacher, and a source of countless memories.”
Though this chapter is closing, her story is just beginning. Armed with new knowledge, a global perspective, and an unbreakable spirit, Ms Pertunia Shabalala is ready to embrace the next phase of her journey.
To new beginnings, fond memories, and a bright future ahead!
