Tackling key social issues at VUT’s transformative workshop

On 25 July 2025, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), through its Student Life and Governance division in collaboration with the Community Engagement department, hosted a critical and transformative workshop to address some of the most pressing challenges facing communities today. The workshop focused on conflict resolution, gender reconciliation, and student engagement in quality assurance.

Facilitators Mr Simon Mothoagane and Mr Nthony Haai from Francois Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) led the discussions with passion and expertise, ensuring a rich and impactful experience for all participants. Their sessions explored topics such as conflict resolution and gender-based violence, sparking thoughtful debate and encouraging meaningful dialogue on sensitive social issues.

The event was supported by the presence of Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Dr Mukondeleli Kanana-Katumba, whose attendance highlighted the significance of the initiative. Contributions also came from key university leaders, including Ms Thiruvani Naidoo, Director of the Quality Promotion Unit, Mr Joseph Radebe, Director of Community Engagement, Dr Muntuwenkosi Chilli, Executive Director of the Centre for Academic Development (CAD), and Mr Clifford Mopedi from the Judicial Office. The programme was co-directed by Ms Nthabiseng Mahlangu and Ms Modiehi Morakile.

The workshop was honoured to welcome Professor Siyanda Makaula, Director of Quality Management at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), as the keynote speaker. His energetic and thought-provoking address on student engagement left a lasting impression on all participants. Professor Makaula defined student engagement as “Nothing about us without us”, or as he boldly rephrased it, “Nothing without us”, emphasising the stance students should adopt in decisions that shape their future.

Anchoring the closing remarks, Mr Sipho Nkosi from Student Life and Governance reflected on the outcomes of the day’s discussions. The workshop successfully cultivated a learning environment that encouraged participants to confront uncomfortable truths while inspiring new perspectives. Above all, it reinforced a commitment to collaborative solutions rooted in mutual respect, understanding, and accountability, qualities essential to advancing both individual growth and broader community development.
