On 28 August, the Tech Collective team at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) hosted its first Women in Tech event under the theme “Empowering Her Voice Through Technology.” Held at the African Languages Auditorium, the gathering marked a milestone in advancing inclusivity in the digital era and inspiring young women to claim their place in the technology sector.
Tech Collective is a student-led initiative of aspiring developers and IT professionals, dedicated to cultivating innovation and collaboration. Deputy president and media officer Ms Bongiwe Mtshali described the launch of the Women in Tech chapter as an opportunity to celebrate women, share knowledge, and unlock ideas. She emphasised that the initiative is not only about technology but also leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurship, urging women to become leaders and changemakers in the digital space.
Guest speaker Ms Kefilwe Mmutle, Senior Manager in Network Solutions Architecture at BCX, encouraged students to position themselves strategically and build personal brands. She explained that technology creates endless opportunities and that credibility and expertise open doors. She acknowledged that leadership can be demanding but stressed that with determination and a strong support system, women will thrive in the industry.
Adding to the powerful messages, Ms Nkosazana Tengimfene, CEO of Liyaphuhla Consultancy, drew on her distinguished career in communications and leadership to highlight disruption as a catalyst for change. She explained that disruption is not about disorder but about leaving a distinct and lasting mark. She urged women to speak boldly, embrace their strengths, and take calculated risks, reminding them that the future of technology requires their voice, vision, and leadership.
The event further emphasised the importance of mentorship and collaboration. By connecting students with professionals and industry leaders, it created a platform for growth, guidance, and leadership development. It also reinforced that women in technology are not simply participants but essential voices shaping the direction and impact of the industry.
The “Empowering Her Voice Through Technology” event was more than a celebration; it was a call to action for women to claim their space in the technology sector. Through Tech Collective, VUT is building a future where women in tech lead with courage, innovation, and inclusivity, ensuring that the digital era reflects diverse perspectives and opportunities.
