The Civil Engineering Department of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) successfully hosted an intensive AutoCAD software training programme from 13 to 31 January 2025. The training, conducted on campus in the university’s computer labs, was facilitated by an instructor from the Centre of Academic Development (CAD) Corporation.
According to Professor George Ochieng, the Head of the Civil Engineering Department, this initiative began three years ago with the goal of optimising the utilisation of laboratory resources, leveraging institutional capacity within the engineering stream, and positioning VUT as a centre of excellence. The programme was developed to empower staff with advanced skills, equipping the department with the expertise needed to become an official AutoCAD test centre. This milestone was made possible with the support of AutoDesk, a global leader in providing products and services for architecture, engineering, construction, and related fields.
Professor Ochieng emphasised the value of this initiative for students, highlighting that obtaining an AutoCAD certification is a rare achievement that enhances employability and professional development. “This is a bonus for our students as it is not everyone who obtains an AutoCAD certification,” he noted.
Mr Simon Mukonda, a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) lecturer and consultant, expressed his gratitude to Learnfast, the CAD Corporation, and the Academic Institute of Excellence for their dedication to ensuring the success of the training. “I thank the Vaal University of Technology for trusting us with delivering such a significant mandate to its participating staff members. As a team, we embarked on a journey that allowed us to explore advanced technologies, particularly in the vast fields of computer-aided design using Autodesk AutoCAD and Revit software,” he said.
The training placed a strong focus on Building Information Modelling (BIM), a digital representation technology that enables architects, engineers, and construction professionals to develop conceptual designs, conduct analysis, and produce 3D visualisations. Participants also explored solutions to challenges faced in industries such as construction, civil engineering, architecture, and mechanical engineering. Over the course of the training, staff members dedicated intense hours to CAD design practice, gaining crucial knowledge and expertise to tackle future industry-related tasks.
Mr Mukonda extended an invitation for further consultations and collaborations, encouraging industry professionals and students to engage with the newly trained experts at VUT. “I am confident that the skills obtained here will help accelerate the rate at which the Vaal University of Technology influences thoughts and inspires its talents,” he concluded.
This initiative underscores VUT’s commitment to academic excellence and technological advancement, reinforcing its role as a hub for industry-leading innovation and education in civil engineering and related disciplines.
