The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is proud to celebrate Ms Kathy van Schalkwyk, Senior Administrator in the Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences, who has been awarded the prestigious National Administrative Excellence Crystal Award for 2025 by the Association for Office Professionals of South Africa (OPSA).

This highly respected national honour recognises outstanding administrative professionals for their leadership, innovation, and dedication across the country. Kathy’s win is not only a personal milestone but a moment of immense pride for the entire VUT community.

Reflecting on the achievement, Kathy shared, “Personally, it feels like a quiet ‘yes’ from God that the hours, the effort, and the heart I put into my work really do matter. Professionally, it is a proud moment to represent VUT and demonstrate that administrative excellence is not just about ticking boxes; it is about leadership, strategy, and care.”

Driven by a simple belief: “If something is worth doing, it is worth doing well,” Kathy’s work is rooted in reliability, innovation, and service. Whether optimising processes, compiling accurate reports, or introducing digital tools that enhance productivity, her passion lies in helping others work better.

Being named a semi-finalist came as a surprise. “I had to reread the email several times! It prompted me to reflect on my journey, the lessons I’ve learnt, and the people who helped me grow.”

In preparation for the OPSA panel at the 2025 Johannesburg conference, Kathy drew from her lived experience: “I reminded myself I was not just speaking for myself, but for every hardworking administrator who keeps things running, often without recognition.”

She credits her ability to blend “heart and systems” as her distinctive edge. “I love structure and tools, but I also care deeply about people. I mentor, I share, I encourage. I don’t just do the work; I help others grow too.”

Throughout the process, she confronted moments of self-doubt. “That voice of uncertainty was there, but I reminded myself that consistency counts. You don’t have to be the loudest in the room to make a meaningful impact.”

Winning the award has deepened her commitment to advancing the profession. Kathy now hopes to use her voice to promote training, build a stronger admin community at VUT, and inspire the next generation of professionals.

Among her proudest achievements are building shared resources and training colleagues in tools like Grammarly, ChatGPT, Adobe and Microsoft 365. These practical interventions have enhanced daily operations.

Her message to fellow administrators is powerful: “Don’t wait for permission to own your worth. Show up. Learn. Share. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being present with purpose.”

Kathy also acknowledges the vital support of her family and colleagues: “My husband and son are my anchor. At work, I’ve been fortunate to be mentored by Professor Christa Grobler and supported by incredible leaders who believed in me. OPSA has inspired me to dream bigger,  not just for myself, but for our entire profession.”

VUT extends heartfelt congratulations to Ms van Schalkwyk on this remarkable achievement. Her integrity, leadership, and generosity exemplify the spirit of excellence that drives the university forward.
