VUT Ekurhuleni Campus upholds the culture of Ubuntu

Music is to our ears: Students from Unity Senior Secondary School showed off their musical talent playing the marimba
“I am what I am, because of who we all are,” the concept of Ubuntu is a common one to the Vaal University of Technology family – especially at the Ekurhuleni Campus which is constantly at work to ensure that their community is well taken care of.
On 2 November the VUT Ekurhuleni Campus gave away computers, furniture and equipment to the local community. Surrounding schools, South African Police Services, churches and two disability homes were the recipients of the assets. This is just one of the many community engagement initiatives they have run this year.
Giving the keynote address at the hand-over was Mr Vido Kungune, the Acting Campus Principal who said: “Our motto as a University says ‛your world to a better future’ which depicts that our mission is, among others, to contribute to a better future for our students and our communities. Our communities are, in fact, the very essence of our existence. We at VUT Ekurhuleni campus therefore want to stand up and be counted among contributors for betterment of personkind.”
Dr Matlala Dube, the Ekurhuleni Campus Administrator, expressed her joy and excitement at the fact that this event was a success. “This is a day to rejoice and I will borrow from the famous words of former Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Irene Moutlana, who insists: ‛When Africa rejoices. Africa sings, when Africa is sad, Africa sings.’ This event is breaking new ground in terms of elevating the status of the University as being a catalyst to impact on the lives of the community through partnerships that work. We are a University that cares, that shares; a University that upholds the culture of philanthropy and that is Ubuntu -botho,” she said, filled with emotion. Dr Dube further said that she hopes that donated assets will contribute to the development of the African child and an African intelligentsia.
Gracing the occasion were the pure and melodious voices of learners from local schools. One school entertained the crowd with their rhythmic marimba-style music.
The community members warmly accepted their gifts and expressed their gratitude to the VUT Ekurhuleni Campus team.
