The world of tourism is a fascinating and dynamic industry that involves a wide array of experiences and opportunities, but most importantly, it is critical to South Africa’s socioeconomic development.
To get a foretaste of the industry, a cohort of one hundred (100) Diploma in Tourism students at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) recently went on the industry’s exploratory mission at the Emerald Casino and Resort in Vanderbijlpark, which is a stone’s throw from the University campus.
In the spirit of the establishment’s slogan, “Your adventure starts here!”, the students were taken on adventurous tour of the facilities – which many later described as an unforgettable experience. Initiated by VUT’s Tourism and Integrated Communications Department with the aim of enhancing teaching and learning experience with industry practice, the immersive experience provided the students with valuable insights into the inner workings of a top-notch tourist destination and offered a glimpse into the diverse career paths available within the industry. The educational tour was accurately designed to provide a comprehensive overview of various facets of tourism at the Emerald Casino and Resort. From exciting game drives to the intricacies of hotel management, zoo operations, and the wonder of the AquaDome, the students were exposed to a range of activities that highlighted the nature of the industry.
The day’s events were expertly guided by one of the resort’s managers, who generously shared their knowledge and expertise with the eager students. Through detailed explanations and engaging narratives, the manager illuminated the strategies and practices that contribute to the success of an iconic resort like theirs. This unique opportunity to learn directly from a seasoned professional allowed the students to grasp the fundamentals of managing a diverse and multifunctional tourism destination.
The game drives, a classic part of the safari experience, provided the students with an up-close encounter with the region’s wildlife and natural beauty. Observing animals in their natural habitat not only sparked a sense of wonder but also underscored the importance of sustainable tourism practices for the preservation of these environments.
The hotel tour gave the students a behind-the-scenes look at the intricate operations that ensure guests have a seamless and memorable stay. From housekeeping to front desk management, the students gained insights into the meticulous attention to detail that goes into providing exceptional guest experiences.
The zoo management segment on the other hand, shed light on the efforts required to maintain the welfare of animals in a captive environment. The students learned about conservation efforts, animal enrichment, and the ethical considerations that guide the operation of zoos.
A highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the AquaDome, a captivating aquarium house that has a vibrant water for people to relax and enjoy the nature of playing in the water. Students admired at the aquatic life on display and gained a newfound appreciation for the innovation of the area.
However, the day’s learning extended beyond the physical experiences. The manager’s presentation also looked into the numerous career opportunities within the tourism industry. From hospitality management to wildlife conservation, event planning to eco-tourism, the breadth of possibilities was both inspiring and eye-opening for the students. This insight into potential career paths ignited their imagination and set the stage for their academic and professional journey in the field of tourism.
In conclusion, the educational tour at Emerald Casino and Resort provided a holistic and enriching introduction to the world of tourism for the vividly intrigued first-year students.
