Accounting Conference equips students with key takeaways for building a successful career

On 10 September 2024, the Department of Accountancy under the Faculty of Management Sciences at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) hosted an inspiring conference for accountancy students themed “Bridging the Gap: Accounting in Partnership with Stakeholders.”
The presence of the esteemed guest speakers from organizations such as the Auditor General South Africa (AGSA), SAGE, the Institute of Internal Auditors South Africa (IIASAA), the South African Institute of Chartered Accountancy (SAICA), and Shumba Inc. contributed significantly to the event.
Professor Chengedzai Mafini, the Executive Dean of the faculty, welcomed all attendees and guests. Prof. Mafini reinforced the students’ capabilities, urging them to believe in themselves and strive for excellence: “Believe that you can be the best version of yourself – never look down on yourself.”
With a vibrant atmosphere, industry professionals shared their career journeys, motivating students to recognize their potential and offering valuable insights into securing employment. They emphasized the importance of being tech-savvy considering the rapid advancement of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and shared their recruitment processes.
Students were informed about potential opportunities within their field, as speakers emphasized essential skills and knowledge they should embrace. Their guidance aimed to equip them with the relevant information needed to build successful careers, this was a powerful reminder of the opportunities available in the accounting field and the importance of collaboration with stakeholders.
Emmanuel Mphelo, an Academic Advisor from the Centre for Academic Development (CAD), highlighted the various programs available to students that assist with exam preparation, writing skills, and computer literacy for those unfamiliar with online platforms. He also emphasized CAD’s role as a vital link between students and faculties, particularly aiding first-year students in their transition from high school to tertiary education.
The event concluded with a question-and-answer session that reinforced the day’s theme, demonstrating that the information shared was both informative and well understood by the students.
The success of the conference can be largely attributed to the dedicated efforts of its organizers. Comprising lecturers, senior lecturers, and head of the department in accountancy, these individuals played a significant role in ensuring that the initiative flourished.
