On 6 November 2024, the Centre for Academic Development (CAD) hosted a spectacular Certificate Ceremony for its mentors and supplemental instruction leaders (SI), all set against the elegant backdrop of a Gala Dinner at the VUT Conference Centre.
Dr. Annie Moletsane, Director: Student Academic Development Support & WIL – Co-operative Education, delivered a powerful and uplifting message that resonated with everyone in attendance. She emphasized the profound impact mentors have on their students, stating, “As mentors, you’ve offered more than just knowledge—you’ve shared your wisdom, encouragement, and belief in each student’s potential. You’ve shown them the path forward, inspired them to reach higher, and given them the tools to succeed not only in their studies but in life.” Her words highlighted the essential role these educators play in nurturing not just academic success but personal growth as well.
She also expressed gratitude towards supplemental instruction leaders (SI), acknowledging their vital contributions: “Thank you for providing that crucial extra layer of support. Your efforts have bridged gaps, clarified complex topics, and lifted the spirits of students who needed it most. You are unsung heroes, always ready to lend a helping hand.”
Mr Elliott Rakhomo, an intern in the Academic Advising unit at CAD also delivered a motivational talk highlighting that in life you choose to be three things: World matter, world spectator and world changer. He echoed the following words from Edmund Gaudett: “those who are successful are remembered for their contributions, the failures are remembered because they tried, but the average, the silent majority is forgotten,”
The evening was not just about recognition, but it served as a reminder for attendees to choose their roles wisely be it as a world matter, world spectator, or world changer. Mentors and supplementary instructors reflected on their journeys and the transformative influence they possess in helping students navigate academic challenges and adapt to university life. They were celebrated for their dedication and commitment to fostering an environment where students can thrive academically and personally.
The ceremony stressed that servanthood is the ultimate responsibility of leadership. The day’s undisputed high point was its distribution of awards, which demonstrated the outstanding participation and dedication of students from different faculties throughout the year. From a moving poetry recited by Thembisile Hlakulani and Umnikazi Wepeni, as well as an exciting musical performance by Camilla, elegantly added to the success of the ceremony. Their contributions wonderfully matched the event’s joyful theme, filling the space with a calm yet lively atmosphere.
In closing, Mr. Mothusi Samosamo, Learning Development Coordinator, emphasized the significance of the titles held by the mentors and supplemental instruction leaders (SI) and the impactful contributions they make to the institution. He articulated that these titles are not merely ceremonial, but they represent a payoff of hard work, dedication, and the transformative journey each individual has undertaken during their time at the VUT.
The CAD team, responsible for organizing the certificate ceremony, played a momentous role in ensuring that this event was a great success. Their diligent planning and execution were evident throughout the ceremony, which was filled with moments of joy and pride. From coordinating logistics to creating an inviting atmosphere, the CAD team truly went above and beyond. They not only facilitated a seamless experience for all attendees but also encouraged an atmosphere where individuals with awards could celebrate their achievements.
