On 30 October 2024, students enrolled in their final year for the Diploma in Labour Law, Diploma in Safety Management, and Advanced Diploma in Safety Management from the Department of Legal Sciences at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) participated in a comprehensive career workshop designed to equip them with essential skills and knowledge for their future workplaces.
The workshop included sessions on career guidance and workplace preparation, focusing on crucial aspects such as crafting effective CVs and cover letters, as well as preparing for interviews. These sessions provided students with take-home lessons into what employers expect from job applicants and were advised on the importance of being mindful of social media presence, as online behavior can significantly influence employment prospects.
To enhance the relevance of the workshop, Mr. Tumelo Malakoane from PM Skills House, representing Alexander Forbes, delivered an enlightening presentation on financial management skills. He emphasized the importance of understanding financial habits, cautioning students about the potential long-term impacts of their financial decisions, “Any financial decision you make today is going to catch you in the future – whether positive or negative”. Mr. Malakoane introduced the 50-30-20 budgeting method allocating 50% of income to essentials, 30% to wants, and 20% to savings as a practical approach to achieving financial discipline. He encouraged students to adopt SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) to guide their financial planning and ensure they build a stable foundation for their careers.
Moreover, Mr. Silungiso Madondo from the Department of Employment and Labour discussed the importance of self-improvement. He urged students to view themselves as brands and to embrace opportunities for innovation and problem-solving. His message indicated that by actively seeking solutions and enhancing their skill sets, students can significantly improve their employability.
This career workshop not only equipped students with practical tools for job searching but also instilled a sense of responsibility regarding their financial futures and personal branding. By combining career preparation with financial literacy and self-development strategies, VUT is fostering a generation of graduates who are not only ready for the workforce but also equipped to navigate the complexities of modern employment landscapes successfully.
