By: Puleng Maphisa – 22 November 2023
In a glorious display of academic excellence and joint solidarity, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) excitedly marked the 6th Annual Residence Awards on the 21st of November 2023 at the Quest Conference Centre. This eagerly awaited event united students, faculties, and stakeholders in a jubilant celebration of the remarkable achievements arising from the heart of VUT’s residential life. The spotlight shone brightly on the invaluable contributions of house committees, the artistic flair of the Impande Art Exhibitors, and the unwavering dedication to a greener campus initiative.
Within a pool of exceptional students, the crème de la crème emerged as the foremost achievers. A total of twenty individuals, five from each faculty, were singled out for their outstanding academic performances. Leading the pack was Ms L.L Buthelezi, whose remarkable average of 86% earned her the title of the number one achiever. Ms Buthelezi, currently studying Diploma in Policing, resides at Phase 1 residence known as Nkandla.
Recognizing the heartbeat of a thriving residence, the Residence Awards ceremony took a heartrending moment to pay tribute to the unsung heroes; the house committees. Through their unwavering dedication, these committees significantly contribute to fostering a harmonious living environment within the residence. This recognition served as a testament to the pivotal role they play in cultivating a sense of community and support.
The Residence Department extended heartfelt homage to the Impande Art Exhibitors operating at the Bantu Hub. Their commitment and efforts were duly acknowledged, underscoring the significance of recognizing, promoting, and celebrating the artistic talents and contributions of students. The infusion of art not only enriches the campus experience but also resonates throughout the entire community.
The event was graced by the wisdom and motivation of guest speakers, Mr. Walker Masungwini and Mr Peter Rasaha. Mr Masungwini, a former top achiever, and chairperson of the Green Campus Initiative, shared his journey, emphasizing that challenges should not limit one’s potential, while Mr Rasaha urged students to stay focused, and to never forget their roots, and highlighted the importance of giving back to the community.
The triumph of the 6th Annual VUT Residence Awards owes its splendour to Mrs Portia Phasha the manager for Living and Learning department and her dedicated team Pakiso Tjotjo Res Life officer, Miehleketo Life Rihlampfu Student program office and Masindi Joseph who always prove that behind every successful event stands an unwaveringly committed group. Their tireless efforts were instrumental in transforming this event into not just a reality but a memorable experience for all. A heartfelt acknowledgment extends to them for their pivotal role in orchestrating this celebration of excellence and community spirit.
