To extend a warm welcome to new residence students at Vaal University of Technology (VUT), the Living and Learning department, in collaboration with the Student Representative Council (SRC) , recently orchestrated a comprehensive tour of the Vaal region. This immersive experience was designed to acquaint students with their new surroundings and foster a sense of belonging.
Vigo Tjotjo, the Residence Life Officer at Vut and one of the organisers, outlined the itinerary, which commenced with a visit to Emerald, a vibrant locale in the Vaal celebrated for its recreational offerings and picturesque landscapes. Here, students engaged with the community and gained insights into its significance.
Moving along, the tour unveiled the grandeur of the Vaal River, a natural marvel intertwined with the lifeblood of neighboring communities. Along its banks, students delved into its ecological importance and its symbolic role as a boundary delineating Gauteng and the Free State province.
Transitioning into urban life, the tour paused at Vaal Mall, a bustling hub of commerce and activity. Amidst the flurry of activity, students familiarized themselves with the amenities available in their new environment.
Prioritizing healthcare, the itinerary included visits to local facilities such as Johan Heyns and the Emfuleni Medi-Clinic. These visits facilitated discussions on health and wellness, offering reassurance to students regarding the support systems available throughout their academic journey.
Further, students gained insights into community safety during a visit to the South African Police Service (SAPS) station in Vanderbijlpark, underscoring the pivotal role of law enforcement in upholding societal harmony.
Nurturing intellectual growth, the tour encompassed a stop at Vanderbijlpark Library, encouraging students to explore knowledge and learning resources.
Culminating the tour was a poignant visit to the Sharpeville Monument Site, commemorating South Africa’s history of resilience and the struggle for freedom. Here, students paid tribute to the courageous individuals who paved the path towards equality.
The orientation tour proved invaluable for VUT’s new students, instilling a profound sense of belonging and community beyond mere geographical familiarity. Through meaningful interactions and discoveries, students embarked on a journey of self-discovery amidst the embrace of the Vaal.
