As it celebrates six decades of impact and advances towards Strategy 2033+, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) continues to reaffirm its commitment to community-centred innovation and inclusive regional development.
VUT was nominated in the Freedom Trophy category at the Golden Triangle Chamber of Commerce (GToC) Awards Evening, held at Pont de Val on 25 July 2026. The awards recognise individuals and organisations whose innovation, service and commitment contribute to the growth and prosperity of the Vaal Triangle.
The Freedom Trophy category honours institutions that make a meaningful contribution to shaping the region’s future by creating opportunities and advancing social mobility. VUT’s nomination reflects its sustained work in education, skills development and mentorship, which equips young people with knowledge, practical capabilities and guidance for personal and professional growth.
The nomination also acknowledges the University’s contribution to social and economic transformation through community engagement, innovation and targeted skills programmes. As the only University of Technology in Southern Gauteng, VUT works with government, industry and community partners to advance education, entrepreneurship, social justice and sustainable development.
Through initiatives ranging from science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) outreach and technical-skills training to community restoration, food security and financial-wellness projects, VUT continues to empower individuals and strengthen communities across the Vaal Triangle. By combining academic excellence with practical and measurable impact, the University contributes to positioning the region as a centre of innovation, opportunity and inclusive growth.
Although VUT did not receive the Freedom Trophy this year, the nomination provided an important platform to showcase the depth and impact of its community-engagement work.
“The event gave us an opportunity to showcase VUT’s community-engagement initiatives and the impact these projects have in the communities we serve,” said Mr Joseph Radebe, Director of Community Engagement.
Representing VUT at the awards were Professor Simphiwe Nelana, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, Commercialisation and Internationalisation (RICI), Mr Radebe, and Ms Maureen Rathopo, Manager in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal.
Building on 60 years of service and guided by Strategy 2033+, VUT will continue to deepen partnerships, expand its community impact and develop skilled graduates who contribute to a resilient and prosperous Vaal Triangle.
