As the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) celebrates 60 years of transforming lives through education under the theme Diamond Jubilee: Legacy in Motion, one graduate’s achievement stands out as a testament to resilience, discipline and academic excellence. Ms Snethemba Mzobe from Orange Farm graduated Summa Cum Laude with an Advanced Diploma in Cost and Management Accounting during the University’s September graduation ceremonies, earning recognition as one of the institution’s top-performing students.
Ms Mzobe’s journey to the top of her class was shaped by determination, consistency and a commitment to excellence. While the path was not without challenges, she remained focused on her academic goals and developed a disciplined approach to her studies. Challenging modules such as Financial and Cost Accounting required dedication and perseverance, but with the guidance of supportive lecturers, including Mr Muhammed, and the resources available through VUT, she was able to excel.

As a mother, Ms Mzobe balanced her academic commitments with family responsibilities, often devoting several hours each day to studying while ensuring she remained present for her young child. The journey demanded resilience, careful time management and an unwavering belief in the goals she had set for herself.
Reflecting on the journey that led to her achievement, Ms Mzobe credited discipline, consistency and the people who supported her along the way:
“I was determined to stay disciplined and strictly follow my study timetable. I made sure to dedicate three to four hours to the topics I found challenging, especially in Financial and Cost Management Accounting. Overall, reaching this level was possible because of the incredible support system I had around me, from my dedicated lecturers and sponsors to my family,” said Ms Mzobe.
Her achievement highlights the impact that commitment and hard work can have when supported by a strong academic environment. It also reflects the opportunities that higher education creates for students striving to overcome circumstances and realise their potential.
