There is something special about returning to the place where your dreams first took shape. For Professor Delia Oosthuizen, the lecture halls where she once sat as a student are now the spaces where she inspires a new generation to dream even bigger.
As the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) celebrates 60 years of transforming lives through education, Prof Oosthuizen’s journey reflects the enduring relationship many alumni have with the institution. What began as a young student’s ambition has grown into a career dedicated to teaching, research and serving the very University that helped shape her future.
Today, she is an Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer and Programme Coordinator in the Department of Tourism and Integrated Communication, where she teaches, supervises postgraduate students, conducts impactful research and helps prepare graduates for careers in the hospitality industry.
Her connection with VUT, however, began long before she joined the academic staff.
A proud VUT alumna, Prof Oosthuizen completed a National Diploma in Food Service Management cum laude, followed by a Bachelor of Technology, Master of Technology (MTech) and Doctor of Technology (DTech) in Food Service Management, graduating with her doctorate in 2011. She later strengthened her academic foundation with a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education, also completed cum laude, in 2019.
Looking back, choosing VUT felt like the natural choice.
“I wanted an institution that would prepare me not only with theoretical knowledge but also with the skills required in the hospitality and food service industry,” she recalls.
That balance between academic knowledge and practical experience would become one of the defining features of her career.
She remembers student life as a time of growth, discovery and challenge. Practical training, collaborative projects and supportive lecturers encouraged her to think differently, while recognition for her academic performance gave her the confidence to believe she was capable of achieving even more.
“Those awards affirmed that hard work and dedication truly pay off,” she says.
The lessons she learned extended well beyond the classroom.
“The curriculum encouraged analytical thinking, problem solving and innovation, while the practical components ensured that I understood the realities of the hospitality and food service industry.”
Perhaps even more importantly, VUT ignited a passion for lifelong learning, inspiring her to continue her studies and eventually build a distinguished academic and research career.
Today, that passion is reflected in research that tackles issues with real social impact, including nutrition, food waste and sustainable food systems. Through her supervision of master’s and doctoral students, she is also helping develop researchers whose work will influence industries and communities for years to come.
Returning to VUT as a lecturer was never simply about finding employment.
“It feels like coming home to an institution that played such an important role in shaping who I am today,” she says.
For Prof Oosthuizen, giving back means much more than standing in front of a classroom. It means mentoring students, guiding emerging researchers, developing relevant curricula and participating in community projects that improve lives.
One of the greatest rewards, she says, is seeing former students succeed in their own careers.
“Every student, research project and community initiative inspires me to learn, innovate and strive for excellence as an educator and researcher.”
Having experienced VUT from both sides of the lecture room, she has witnessed the University’s remarkable transformation.
She believes VUT has evolved into a research focused institution that continues to strengthen postgraduate education, digital learning, innovation and meaningful partnerships with industry and communities.
“I am especially proud to be part of a university that values research with impact.”
Her own work in community nutrition, food security and postgraduate supervision has shown her how research can create practical solutions to everyday challenges while making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
Looking ahead, she believes VUT’s future depends on embracing emerging technologies while remaining true to its practical, hands-on approach to education.
She hopes to see stronger industry partnerships, expanded international collaborations and greater opportunities for interdisciplinary research. She also believes artificial intelligence, digital transformation, entrepreneurship and sustainability should play an even greater role in preparing graduates for an increasingly complex world.
“Preparing graduates for rapidly changing workplaces requires innovative teaching approaches while maintaining the practical, hands-on education for which Universities of Technology are known.”
Above all, she hopes VUT will continue placing student success at the centre of everything it does by ensuring every student has access to the support and opportunities needed to realise their full potential.
Drawing on more than two decades of experience in both industry and academia, Prof Oosthuizen offers students simple but powerful advice.
“Be curious, work hard and never stop learning.”
She encourages them to embrace practical learning opportunities, seek mentorship, build meaningful relationships and become involved in research and community engagement.
“Most importantly, believe in yourself. Success does not happen overnight. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn, and every setback can become a stepping stone towards future success.”
As VUT celebrates its Diamond Jubilee, Prof Oosthuizen reflects on the University’s legacy with gratitude.

She believes the University’s greatest achievement is not simply the qualifications it awards, but the lives it transforms and the leaders it nurtures.
Her own journey, from student to educator, researcher and mentor, is living proof that when a university invests in its students, those students often return to invest in future generations.
