The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has contributed to the development of immersive technology courses launched globally through the Metaverse Academy Project on 4 March 2026, marking an important step in expanding access to digital and extended reality skills.
The international initiative has introduced 19 courses focused on augmented reality, virtual reality and extended reality technologies, providing free learning opportunities for students, academics, entrepreneurs, industry professionals and members of the public interested in immersive technologies.
The Metaverse Academy project brings together universities and partners from across Europe and other regions with the shared objective of developing accessible training programmes that prepare individuals for emerging opportunities in digital innovation and immersive technologies.
VUT’s academic contribution
As part of this global collaboration, VUT developed three of the 19 courses, focusing on visual design and immersive content creation using photographic technologies.
The courses include:
Visual Design Principles for AR, VR and XR
This course introduces core visual design concepts including colour theory, typography and composition, demonstrating how these principles can be applied in the creation of effective immersive experiences.
360 Degree Audio Visual Content Creation for AR, VR and XR using Photography and EON Reality Products
This course provides practical guidance on producing immersive 360-degree visual content using photographic technologies and specialised tools used in AR and VR environments.
Immersive Technologies for Creative Practice
This course explores how artists and designers can use AR, VR and XR technologies within the creative industries, opening new possibilities for digital storytelling and design.
Collaborative academic effort
The development of the courses reflects a strong interdisciplinary collaboration within VUT, bringing together expertise from the Information and Communication Technology, Education, and Visual Arts and Design departments.
Academics involved in the project include Mr Ricardo da Rocha, Prof Anneke de Klerk, Prof Rene van Eck, Mr Sarel Havenga, Ms Zanele Radebe, Mr Jon Jon Hess, Mr Colin Matemele, Ms Anele Ludidi and Ms Antoinette Lombard.
The courses cover a broad range of competencies including immersive technologies, digital innovation, entrepreneurship and immersive content development.
Importantly, the programmes are designed to be accessible to a wide audience, and no prior qualifications are required to enrol.
Expanding access to digital skills
The Metaverse Academy courses aim to benefit a diverse group of learners including students, academics, entrepreneurs, industry professionals and unemployed youth seeking to develop skills in emerging technologies.
Access to the courses is free of charge, and participants who complete the modules successfully receive a certificate for each course completed.
Beyond the initial launch, the project is expected to stimulate wider engagement with immersive technologies and encourage further exploration of their applications across education, business and the creative industries.
The academy will also be showcased at a prestigious international event scheduled for May, where further discussions on XR innovation and digital learning will take place.
Strengthening global collaboration
Participation in the Metaverse Academy project has also strengthened VUT’s international partnerships and research networks. Through the collaboration, academics have established connections with colleagues across Europe, creating new opportunities for knowledge exchange and future joint initiatives.
The university has already been invited to participate in another international project proposal currently under consideration.
Reflecting on the milestone, project coordinator Prof Anneke de Klerk said the launch represents the culmination of more than two years of work.
“This milestone is what we have been working towards since the beginning of 2024, and we are very excited to share it with the VUT community. We hope that staff, students and external stakeholders will take the opportunity to expand their knowledge and enter the immersive technology world.”
All 19 courses are now available through the Metaverse Academy platform. More information can be found at Metaverse Academy
