The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is celebrating another significant research milestone after the National Research Foundation (NRF) awarded Dr Idowu David Ibrahim, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Industrial Engineering, Operations Management and Mechanical Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, a prestigious C2 research rating.
The NRF C2 rating recognises established researchers whose work has earned sustained recognition from peers for its quality, consistency and impact. For Dr Ibrahim, the honour reflects years of dedicated scholarship, innovative research, postgraduate supervision and academic leadership.
Receiving the news was a defining moment in his academic journey.
“Receiving confirmation of my NRF C2 rating from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, Commercialisation and Internationalisation (RICI), Professor Simphiwe Nelana, together with the wonderful commendation from the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Khehla Ndlovu, was both humbling and deeply rewarding,” he said.
“It was a moment of gratitude, reflecting years of dedication to research, teaching, mentorship and scholarly service. Beyond the personal satisfaction, the rating represents recognition by respected peers of the quality, consistency and impact of my research contributions.”
Rather than viewing the achievement as the culmination of his work, Dr Ibrahim sees it as the beginning of a new chapter.
“It has strengthened my confidence to pursue more ambitious and interdisciplinary research while mentoring emerging scholars. Personally, this achievement is not an endpoint but a motivation to continue producing impactful research that addresses societal challenges, advances knowledge and enhances Africa’s research and innovation landscape.”
His recognition also reflects the growing research stature of VUT’s Faculty of Engineering and Technology and reinforces the University’s commitment to producing research that delivers practical solutions to real world challenges.
According to Dr Ibrahim, the rating enhances both the Department’s reputation and its ability to expand meaningful research partnerships.
“Attaining a C2 rating reflects the Department’s growing research excellence and national recognition. It strengthens credibility, attracts research funding and collaborations, enhances postgraduate supervision, enriches teaching through research led learning, and promotes innovation by translating high quality engineering research into practical solutions with meaningful societal and industrial impact.”
The achievement aligns closely with VUT’s Strategic Plan 2033+, which places research, innovation and global competitiveness at the centre of the University’s long-term vision. Dr Ibrahim believes his rating will contribute directly to these institutional ambitions by strengthening VUT’s research profile, expanding collaborative opportunities and supporting the development of the next generation of researchers.
“My research rating reflects a sustained commitment to scholarly excellence, impactful research and knowledge generation, all of which align closely with the Vaal University of Technology’s Strategic Plan 2033+ and its vision of becoming a globally recognised institution of innovation and academic excellence.”
He added that a recognised research profile enhances the University’s ability to secure national and international research funding while strengthening its reputation and visibility within the global academic community.
“Through quality publications, postgraduate supervision and interdisciplinary collaboration, I hope to contribute to building a vibrant research culture that supports innovation, sustainable development and meaningful societal impact across South Africa and the African continent,” he said.
Dr Ibrahim also hopes his achievement will encourage colleagues and students to pursue excellence with determination and purpose.
“Receiving this recognition is not only a personal milestone but also a reminder that dedication, perseverance and continuous learning can lead to meaningful impact. I hope my achievement encourages colleagues to pursue excellence through collaboration and innovation, inspires students to believe that consistent effort and curiosity can open new
opportunities, and motivates emerging researchers to tackle complex challenges with confidence and integrity.”
Looking ahead, he intends to use his NRF C2 rating to strengthen interdisciplinary and international research partnerships, attract competitive funding, mentor postgraduate students and early career academics, and deepen collaboration with industry, government and global academic institutions.
“My priorities are to strengthen a sustainable research programme that produces high impact, socially relevant outputs while expanding interdisciplinary and international collaborations. Leveraging my C2 rating, I intend to attract competitive research funding, mentor emerging researchers and postgraduate students, and further partnerships with industry, government and global academic institutions.”
He believes these efforts will contribute to increased postgraduate success, stronger institutional research performance and the University’s strategic objectives of academic excellence, internationalisation and sustainable development.
As VUT celebrates its 60th Diamond Jubilee, Dr Ibrahim’s NRF C2 rating stands as another testament to the University’s growing research excellence and expanding influence within South Africa’s higher education landscape.
