At just 21, Alrinah Bonolo Makgatha epitomises resilience and ambition. Hailing from Zebediela, a small village in Limpopo, she has overcome the challenges of a disadvantaged background with unwavering determination. Now, she stands on the brink of an opportunity that could redefine her future.
A third-year student pursuing a Diploma in Internal Auditing at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), Alrinah has distinguished herself as one of the top achievers in the Faculty of Management Sciences. This recognition speaks to her dedication and academic excellence. Recently, she was shortlisted for the prestigious Abe Bailey Trust 2024 educational programme, which includes a travel bursary. This unique programme offers South African students a chance to travel to the United Kingdom (UK) for three weeks, combining cultural immersion with professional networking.
The tour officially begins in Cape Town on 26 November 2024 with an orientation, where the group will spend several days together before departing for London on 29 November. As she prepares for the journey, Alrinah shares a mix of excitement and uneasiness. “This opportunity is huge for me,” she says. “It will not only allow me to network with professionals in my field but also provide invaluable exposure to the industry.” For Alrinah, this experience is about more than professional growth; it’s a chance to embrace cultural diversity and enrich her personal development.
Alrinah’s ambitions extend beyond her current studies. She envisions a future as a professional internal auditor with an international outlook, aiming to bring back insights that bridge cultural and professional divides in South Africa. “I want to make sure that this experience has a positive impact on my career,” she says, highlighting her aspiration to practise auditing at a managerial level.
Reflecting on her journey, Alrinah offers advice to her peers: “Hard work is key to success.” She encourages fellow students to seize opportunities by building not only their academic credentials but also essential soft skills.
Alrinah expresses deep gratitude for the support she has received from VUT throughout the process. The Internationalisation Office assisted with her visa application and provided branded clothing for the trip. Support from the Accountancy Department and the Centre for Academic Development (CAD) was also instrumental in securing referral letters essential for this opportunity. “I sincerely appreciate all the support I’ve received so far,” she says.
“It’s incredibly exciting that our VUT student has made it through the stringent selection process for such an esteemed travel tour. This aligns well with VUT’s agenda on internationalisation and promoting intercultural exchange,” commented Mr Vido Kungune, the acting Director for Internationalisation.
As Alrinah Bonolo Makgatha prepares to embark on her journey abroad, she stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for young women everywhere. Her story shows that, despite humble beginnings, dreams can be realised through hard work and determination. With every step toward her goals, Alrinah not only transforms her own life but also paves the way for others who aspire to dream big.
The Abe Bailey bursary is open to all registered students at South African residential universities, as well as junior academic staff members. Staff and students are encouraged to contact the Internationalisation Office for more information on exchange programmes and scholarship opportunities like this bursary and to stay updated through the university’s communication channels.
