Professor Lazarus Mohapi Maleho, the newly appointed Executive Dean of the Faculty of Human Sciences at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), exemplifies academic excellence and transformational leadership. With over a decade of academic experience, Prof Maleho brings a wealth of knowledge and a firm commitment to education and societal advancement to his role. His career spans various leadership positions, including lecturer, programme coordinator, and Head of Department, showcasing his deep understanding of higher education and its potential to effect meaningful change.
As Executive Dean of Human Sciences, Prof Maleho has already made a significant impact. One of his standout achievements is leading a dynamic restructuring of the faculty, consolidating departments to improve operational efficiency and align academic offerings with the changing needs of society. Under his leadership, the Department of Hospitality, Tourism, and Public Relations evolved into the Department of Tourism and Integrated Communication—a strategic move reflecting his vision for a modern, responsive academic environment.
“I am dedicated to nurturing an inclusive academic culture that prioritises excellence in teaching, learning, research, and community engagement,” Prof Maleho asserts. For him, the Faculty of Human Sciences is not merely an academic entity but a driver of social transformation in the Vaal region and beyond. By fostering partnerships with local communities, government, and industry stakeholders, he envisions programmes that prepare students for successful careers while empowering them to make meaningful contributions to society.
Prof Maleho’s leadership extended to critical moments, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, during which he chaired the task team responsible for developing VUT’s assessment policy, ensuring academic integrity in unprecedented circumstances. Beyond VUT, his influence is felt through his membership in the South African Humanities Deans Association (SAHUDA). His scholarly contributions are equally impressive, including the supervision and co-supervision of Master’s and PhD students, mentorship of 20 BTech students, publications in reputable journals, and presentations at both national and international conferences. His dedication to academic excellence was recognised with the Faculty Research Award, further underscoring his commitment to scholarship.
Central to Prof Maleho’s leadership philosophy is unity and collaboration among faculty programmes. He draws inspiration from the African philosophy of Ubuntu, eloquently articulated by Nelson Mandela: “The profound sense that we are human only through the humanity of others; that if we are to accomplish anything in this world, it will in equal measure be due to the work and achievement of others.”
With an unwavering commitment to education and transformation, Prof Maleho leads with purpose and vision, ensuring the Faculty of Human Sciences remains at the forefront of innovation and societal impact. Under his stewardship, the future of VUT’s academic community is poised to thrive—rooted in excellence and inspired by the enduring spirit of humanity.
