On 7 April 2025, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) had the honour of welcoming Professor France Mashaba as the guest speaker for its Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences Autumn Graduation Ceremony. A distinguished academic and researcher in mathematics education, Professor Mashaba currently holds a C2 NRF rating and serves at the University of South Africa (UNISA). His work continues to earn both national and international recognition.
Professor Mashaba delivered a powerful address, filled with both inspiration and practical insight.
“Graduations are often seen as the final chapter in a student’s academic journey, but in reality, it marks the beginning of a lifelong mission of growth and discovery,” he said. “The lecture halls and classrooms may fade into the past, but the lessons learned within them become the foundation for an ever-evolving professional life.”
He reminded graduates that regardless of their field, be it chemistry, biotechnology or environmental health, one truth remains: continuous development is essential. He encouraged them to embrace challenges as learning opportunities and to approach each with a growth mindset.
“As industries shift, technologies advance, and expectations rise, the ability to adapt becomes one of the most valuable skills you can possess. Embrace lifelong learning not just as a necessity, but as a mindset,” he added.
Professor Mashaba emphasised that the tools gained through education are only the beginning. It is now up to the graduates to continue sharpening them as they shape their futures and contribute meaningfully to society. “Your journey is far from over,” he said. “Stay adaptable and never stop learning.”
Having Professor Mashaba share his words of wisdom at VUT was a privilege. His contributions to mathematics education, and his unwavering commitment to developing future educators and researchers, will undoubtedly inspire generations to come.
