VUT F’SASEC Centre, in partnership with The Innovation Hub, hosted its second Entrepreneurship Education Workshop to equip engineering students with innovation, business development, and entrepreneurial skills for future job creation.

The Vaal University of Technology department F’SASEC (French Southern Schneider Electric Education Centre), under the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET), in partnership with The Innovation Hub, successfully hosted its second Entrepreneurship Education Workshop for engineering students on 21 May 2026.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to equip students with an entrepreneurial mindset and empower them to transform technical knowledge and engineering ideas into innovative business opportunities capable of addressing real world challenges.

F’SASEC continues to strengthen innovation and entrepreneurship within the engineering and technology space by creating platforms where students can engage with practical business concepts and industry driven solutions. Through workshops such as these, students are exposed to critical areas including start-up development, leadership, innovation, business management, and problem solving.

According to Ms Msizi Nyembe, F’SASEC Coordinator, “Entrepreneurship is important within the engineering and technology sector because it helps transform technical ideas and innovations into practical products, services, and businesses that solve real world problems.”

She further explained that the workshop was designed to equip students with critical skills including business planning, problem solving, communication, teamwork, and financial management.

The workshop also featured Ms Bonakele Kunene, Business Development Officer at The Innovation Hub, who highlighted that “Entrepreneurship is vital for students in engineering and technology because it enables them to shift from being job seekers to becoming problem solvers and job creators.”

Young entrepreneurs continue to face both academic and social challenges. Many struggle with limited business knowledge, lack of mentorship, and balancing academic responsibilities with business development. Limited access to funding, professional networks, and practical opportunities further impacts their growth. However, despite these challenges, young entrepreneurs continue to rise with resilience, creativity, and determination to create opportunities for themselves and others.

One of the attendees, Mr Vuyani Simelane, Lab Assistant at F’SASEC, emphasised the value of the workshop, stating that students are privileged to participate in such initiatives. He added that although the workshop is student focused, VUT staff members can also benefit, as unemployment remains a social challenge affecting people of all ages.

F’SASEC is widely recognised for hosting impactful community development initiatives, including Domestic and Industrial Installation Training, Solar Training, and Entrepreneurship Workshops aimed at empowering communities through technical and entrepreneurial skills development.
