Mr Mpho Gift Mosamedi, an athlete and graduate, proudly earns his Diploma in Operations Management, turning years of perseverance, discipline and sacrifice into a well-deserved achievement

For Mr Mpho Gift Mosamedi, graduating with a Diploma in Operations Management during the Vaal University of Technology’s Spring Graduation ceremonies on 15 September 2026 represents far more than an academic qualification. It is the culmination of years of perseverance, discipline and sacrifice, and a reminder that success often belongs to those who refuse to give up, even when the journey becomes difficult.

Originally from Moloto in Mpumalanga, Mr Mosamedi’s journey to graduation was shaped by much more than lectures and examinations. Alongside his studies, he pursued his passion for athletics, balancing the demands of training, competition and an internship while navigating the financial and personal challenges that many students face. Through it all, he remained guided by a simple principle: “I never stop until I finish what I started.”

When he first enrolled for Operations Management, his focus was less on the qualification itself and more on creating opportunities for a better future. However, as he progressed through his studies, he developed a genuine appreciation for the discipline and its role in ensuring that organisations function effectively. What began as a practical decision gradually evolved into a career path that sparked his interest and ambition.

The journey was not always easy. Like many students, Mr Mosamedi experienced setbacks and moments when the pressure of academic life felt overwhelming. Balancing coursework with the demands of athletics required discipline, careful time management and a willingness to keep going when circumstances seemed stacked against him. Yet every challenge reinforced his determination rather than diminishing it.

Athletics has been a constant presence in his life since his middle school years, when he surprised himself with a strong performance in his first 800-metre race. The experience ignited a passion that eventually led him to specialise in the 200-metre and 400-metre sprint events. Over time, athletics became more than a competitive pursuit. It provided an outlet during difficult periods, taught him discipline and helped him maintain focus when life became challenging.

Mr Mosamedi admits that failure formed part of both his academic and sporting journeys. However, he believes the most important lesson was learning how to recover from disappointment. Every setback taught him resilience and reinforced the value of perseverance. Instead of allowing obstacles to define him, he learned to see them as opportunities for growth and improvement.

Success also required difficult choices. Determined to take both his studies and athletics seriously, he stepped away from distractions that could take his focus away from his goals. He became more intentional about how he spent his time and surrounded himself with people who encouraged his ambitions. While those decisions sometimes meant sacrificing certain social experiences, he believes they helped him stay on course and build the future he envisioned for himself.

Throughout the journey, the support of his mother remained a source of strength. He affectionately refers to her as his “first lady” and credits her unwavering encouragement with helping him persevere through difficult times. His coaches and fellow athletes also played an important role, offering guidance, motivation and a sense of community that made the challenges more manageable.

Financial constraints presented additional hurdles along the way. One of the moments that affected him most was when his mother was unable to share some of his experiences because of financial limitations. For Mr Mosamedi, it was a reminder that many students silently carry burdens that are not always visible to others. Rather than allowing those challenges to discourage him, they strengthened his determination to succeed.

As he celebrates this achievement, Mr Mosamedi sees his diploma as much more than a qualification. It represents the countless early mornings, training sessions, examinations, sacrifices and moments of self-belief that brought him to this point. More importantly, it represents a promise he made to himself years ago: to finish what he started.

Although graduation marks a significant milestone, Mr Mosamedi views it as the beginning rather than the end of his journey. His immediate goal is to secure employment and begin building his career in Operations Management. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue his studies should the opportunity and financial support become available.

Reflecting on his journey, he hopes his story will encourage others who may be facing obstacles of their own. His message is simple: “Go for what you want, even if it takes a long time.” His experience is proof that success does not always come quickly, but with patience, discipline and persistence, even the most challenging journeys can lead to remarkable destinations.
