The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) recognised alumni and student leaders for their contributions to the Operations Management and Industrial Engineering Student Society (OMIESSO) at Sisonke Restaurant on 27 October 2026.
The event brought together alumni, staff and students from the Department of Industrial Engineering, Operations Management and Mechanical Engineering to celebrate leadership and strengthen connections between students and graduates.
Alumni Mr Brian Sebua, Mr Teboho Mofokeng and Mr Louis Makumbila received recognition for their involvement. Student society leaders Makgoshi Fenyane, Ndonji Manengu, Matshidiso Chauke and Nthabiseng Mokoena were also acknowledged, with Fenyane recognised as OMIESSO’s first chairperson.
Current Chairperson Mr Tapelo Ngoveni said the society represents students’ academic and social interests while creating opportunities for leadership and career development.
“We stand for students whose voices are not heard,” he said.
OMIESSO’s activities include career events, examination preparation sessions, workshops, plant visits and school outreach.
Acting Head of Department Dr John Ikome encouraged students to persevere through academic challenges, while alumni speakers shared practical lessons from their careers.
Mr Sebua recalled balancing his Industrial Engineering studies with full-time employment at Sasol and family responsibilities.
“I was working for Sasol, working shifts. And then I would drive from night shift, which was 12 hours, six to six. Get home, take a shower, head to class without sleeping,” he recalled.
He encouraged students to use their opportunities effectively and apply their knowledge to solving industry challenges.
Lecturer Ms Dokas Mallane acknowledged those who helped establish OMIESSO and urged alumni to support students through mentorship, industry exposure and employment opportunities.
Receiving his award, Mr Fenyane called for continued support for the society.
“I am very happy to receive this recognition. We must keep this initiative going and ensure that OMIESSO continues serving students. We want the society to remain active and continue making a positive contribution to students and the department,” he said.
In closing, Senior Lecturer Mr Rishi Sukraj thanked alumni for returning to share their experiences and encouraged students to build on their achievements. The event highlighted the role of sustained alumni involvement in helping students prepare for professional life.
