A singing student athlete: Ms Smilo Crystal shines on and off the field

At 23, Ms Smilo Crystal is living a life that refuses to be confined to a single path. While many students focus on one pursuit, she has chosen to stretch herself across multiple worlds, navigating academics, sport, and music with a sense of purpose that feels both deliberate and deeply personal.

A third-year Internal Auditing student at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), originally from Bethal in Mpumalanga, Ms Crystal represents a generation of students who are not waiting to discover themselves after graduation, but are actively shaping their identities in real time.

Her journey in sport began in Grade 6 at Hoërskool Oosterland in Secunda, where she first discovered her passion for hockey. What started as curiosity soon evolved into commitment. At VUT, that commitment has translated into performance, as she developed into a disciplined and tactically aware player.

Transitioning from a left link position to a blocker, she embraced one of the most demanding roles on the field, requiring both endurance and sharp decision-making. Her dedication was rewarded in 2025 when she scored nine goals, finishing as the season’s leading goal scorer and earning recognition as the most outstanding player.

Alongside her sporting achievements, Ms Crystal has been quietly building a powerful presence in the creative space. As a singer, songwriter, and poet, she has crafted a voice that resonates far beyond campus. Her music has been featured on platforms such as Trace Africa and SABC 1, while also receiving airplay on radio stations across the country.

Her musical career took shape in 2021 with the release of her debut single Heartbeat. She followed this with Total Stranger, a breakout track that achieved over 200,000 streams across digital platforms, marking a significant step in her growth as an artist. With Awunak’ Thula, she delivered a high-energy track that has become a defining feature of her live performances, connecting her directly with audiences.

As her profile continues to rise, she has shared stages with some of South Africa’s leading artists, including Young Stunna, Kabza De Small, Pcee, and Nkosazana Daughter. Yet, despite these milestones, she remains grounded, guided by a strong sense of faith that informs both her personal life and her creative journey.

For Ms Crystal, faith is not separate from her ambition. It is the anchor that keeps her steady, shaping how she approaches success, pressure, and uncertainty. It allows her to pursue multiple dreams without losing sight of who she is.

Her entrepreneurial spirit is equally evident. As the founder of her own record label, Crystal Music World, she has taken ownership of her artistic direction while expanding her footprint in the industry. Beyond this, she has demonstrated a commitment to community engagement by hosting her first 4.9 km Youth Day race in 2023, which attracted over 100 participants.

Her growing influence has led to brand partnerships with Garnier and Binda’z Hair, as well as features in publications such as SlikourOnLife, Daily Sun, and Seskhona Newspaper. She has also received industry recognition through a nomination for Best Trending Song at the Mpumalanga Awards.

Despite the demands of her multiple roles, Ms Crystal remains focused on her academic journey. She has already set her sights on postgraduate studies, with a clear intention to continue growing intellectually while expanding her presence on the global music stage.

“I’m planning on furthering my studies, master’s for sure,” she said. “The rest I will see with time, especially if I become an international artist.”

Her story is not simply about talent. It is about discipline, balance, and the courage to pursue more than one calling at once. It reflects a student who understands that success is not a single destination, but a continuous process of becoming.

In Ms Smilo Crystal, the University finds a powerful example of what it means to be both grounded and ambitious, focused yet expansive. She does not choose between her passions. She carries them all, and in doing so, she is steadily building a future that is entirely her own.
