In a powerful testament to perseverance and purpose, Mr Mabaso Mandla Mthokozisi Richard has graduated cum laude from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), marking an outstanding academic achievement in the field of Chemistry. His journey, shaped by late inspiration and quiet determination, stands as a compelling reminder that purpose does not always arrive early, but when it does, it must be pursued with conviction.
Mr Mabaso’s passion for chemistry was not formed in childhood. It emerged later, during his high school years, while studying Physical Sciences. An inspiring teacher ignited his curiosity and opened a door he had not previously considered. In that moment, a future began to take shape, grounded in discovery, discipline, and possibility.
Guided by this newfound passion, he enrolled at VUT, where he immersed himself in analytical and applied chemistry. The path was not without difficulty, yet he remained anchored by a clear sense of purpose. For him, academic success was never an end in itself, but a means to contribute meaningfully to society.
His master’s research, titled Synthesis of Magnetite ZR Graphene Oxide for Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ Ion Adsorption from Water, speaks directly to one of the most urgent challenges of our time, water pollution. Through this work, he explored innovative materials capable of removing toxic heavy metals such as lead and cadmium from contaminated water sources. The implications are significant, offering practical pathways towards safer water and healthier communities.
A defining influence in his academic journey was the example of a respected mentor whose own achievements demonstrated what was possible. Through her guidance and encouragement, Mr Mabaso gained both the confidence and the clarity to pursue postgraduate study. That support became a turning point, reinforcing his belief in his own potential.
Reflecting on his journey, he speaks with quiet conviction about the value of education. He urges young people to remain focused and committed, emphasising that discipline and persistence are essential to unlocking opportunity. Education, in his view, is not merely a pathway to employment, but a foundation for transformation.
His story transcends academic achievement. It is a narrative of resilience, growth, and the enduring power of inspiration. From a late awakening to a distinction earned through sustained effort, Mr Mabaso Mandla Mthokozisi Richard embodies the spirit of possibility.
As he graduates as part of the 60th generation of VUT graduates, his work stands as a meaningful contribution to environmental sustainability and scientific advancement, a reflection of excellence shaped by purpose and realised through commitment.
