VUT alumna Jerminah Nteso advances to provincial netball coaching ranks

A proud alumna of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), Sharpeville-born Ms Jerminah Nteso continues to carve out a meaningful path in South African netball, steadily building her legacy as both a skilled player and an emerging coach.

Ms Nteso, who holds a National Diploma in Sports Management, a Baccalaureus Technologiae (BTech) in Business Administration, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education from VUT, has recently been appointed as assistant coach of the Free State Sonoblomo. The team competes in the annual Telkom Netball League organised by Netball South Africa.

Her appointment marks a significant milestone in a journey shaped by discipline, resilience, and a deep-rooted passion for the sport. Between 2009 and 2014, she represented VUT’s netball structures, developing as a competitive athlete while balancing the demands of her academic journey. Even earlier, she showcased her talent on the national stage as a member of the South African Under-21 Netball Team from 2008 to 2010.

Her relationship with her alma mater has remained steadfast. From 2022 to 2025, Ms Nteso served as head coach of the VUT Netball Club, playing a pivotal role in nurturing student-athletes and strengthening the University’s sporting culture.

In a compelling turn of events, her recent appointment follows her time as a player for the Free State Sonoblomo in 2023. The transition from player to assistant coach within the same provincial structure reflects both her depth of experience and the confidence placed in her leadership.

Her journey extends beyond provincial borders. Ms Nteso has represented Sedibeng District in Gauteng, Fezile Dabi District in the Free State, and the Gauteng provincial team, demonstrating consistency, adaptability, and commitment across competitive platforms.

Reflecting on her achievement, Ms Nteso expressed both gratitude and humility. “I feel honoured to have been appointed as the assistant coach of the Free State Sonoblomo. It came unexpectedly, but I am grateful for the trust placed in me,” she said.

Her journey from student-athlete to provincial coach stands as a testament to perseverance and purpose. It is a story that echoes beyond the court, affirming how VUT graduates continue to shape industries, uplift communities, and carry the University’s legacy into new arenas.
