Laughter echoed across the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Amphitheatre on 23 July 2026 as the institution celebrated its 60th anniversary with an evening of humour, entertainment and unforgettable memories. As part of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations, Student Governance and Student Support Services (SSS) hosted the inaugural VUT Comedy Show, giving students a refreshing and exciting way to welcome the second semester.
The event formed part of the University’s ongoing efforts to celebrate six decades of excellence while creating meaningful opportunities for student engagement beyond the classroom. The comedy show was designed to bring students together, foster a sense of belonging and provide a well-deserved opportunity to unwind before the academic demands of the second semester.
The atmosphere was electric as students filled the Amphitheatre, ready to enjoy an evening where laughter took centre stage. The programme was hosted by popular entertainer DJ Sbu, who encouraged students to put aside academic pressures for the night and enjoy themselves.
“Tonight is not about being formal; it is about having fun, creating memories and celebrating together as the VUT family,” said DJ Sbu, setting the tone for an entertaining evening.
The comedy line-up featured some of South Africa’s rising and well-known comedians, including Summary, Oscar Omuhle, Moeketsi Montshitsi (Saki) and Mashabela Galane, who kept the audience entertained with their unique styles of comedy and relatable storytelling.
For many students, the event was more than just a comedy show. It became an opportunity to connect with fellow students and celebrate being part of VUT’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Student Mr Thabo Moloisane described the event as one of the most enjoyable experiences he has had at the University.
“I had the fun of my life. It was a great experience, and events like these bring students together. However, some jokes should be carefully considered, especially those about people’s appearance, because some individuals already experience discrimination in society,” he said.
Ms Lerato Mogoto also expressed her excitement about the event.
“I really had fun. It was a great way to start the semester and enjoy time with fellow students.”
The successful comedy show demonstrated VUT’s commitment to creating a vibrant student experience beyond academics. As the University celebrates six decades of excellence, innovation and transformation, initiatives such as these highlight the importance of student wellness, engagement and creating spaces where students can relax, connect and celebrate together.
