VUT HR induction sets the stage for success

The Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT) Human Resource (HR) Department recently held an insightful HR induction event for its new employees at the VUT Conference Centre, a two-day gathering held from 24 to 25 March 2025. This induction aimed to welcome and onboard new staff members while fostering engagement, networking, and knowledge sharing among employees and senior leadership.

Dr Martin Lerata, the HR Organisational Development (OD) & Performance Specialist, directed the programme for two days. He highlighted the importance of education in driving innovation and emphasised the need to produce “techno-entrepreneurial graduates,” setting a positive tone for the event.

On the first day, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Kehla Ndlovu, and other key leaders attended the induction to express their commitment to the development and success of new team members. In his introductory remarks, Prof Ndlovu conveyed the university’s dedication to creating a vibrant and inviting environment for staff and students. To illustrate this, Prof Ndlovu used the analogy of a jigsaw puzzle to depict how each employee plays a crucial role in enhancing student success at VUT. He pointed out that just like an incomplete puzzle, the university’s achievements rely on the contributions of everyone.

Several other influential figures contributed valuable insights throughout the induction. Prof Christa Grobler the Executive Dean of Applied and Computer Sciences, introduced fellow Executive Deans to the new hires and later delivered the closing remarks for Day 1. She emphasised the importance of building strong relationships with the Centre for Academic Development (CAD) and encouraged new employees to seek support when needed.

Dr Sibusiso Mchunu, Executive Director for Student Support Services, provided an overview of the governance structures that assist VUT students. His presentation highlighted the essential role of staff in guiding and supporting students, concluding with an inspiring quote from Peter Senge about lifelong growth and development.

Ms Tisch Farrell, the acting Executive Director for Marketing and Communications, presented an overview of the department and educated attendees about the “maVUTi Logo,” which covers various marketing elements and the significance of the university’s branding.

Dr Muntuwenkosi Chili, Executive Director for CAD, further elaborated on how academic development supports faculty and staff in achieving excellence in teaching and learning.

On the second day, Mr Vido Kungune, Acting Director for Internationalisation, discussed VUT’s global partnerships and the importance of international exposure. He addressed concerns about declining international student enrolment since 2021, attributing it to policies requiring upfront tuition payment and the “first come, first served” principle in registration.

Additional presentations included insights from Mrs Thembi Mashiloane: Benefits Practitioner on employee remuneration and benefits, Mr Neo Masudubele: Finance Director on financial processes, and Mr Mattheson Lehloo: Supply Chain Manager on procurement policies, each clarifying critical administrative aspects of working at VUT. The HR induction event was a resounding success, equipping new employees with valuable insights into VUT’s operations, opportunities, and essential roles in the university’s ongoing journey of growth and success.
