The Cancer Awareness Tournament, hosted by VUT Softball Club in partnership with VUT Sport, at the Isak Steyl Stadium on 7 October was hailed another success.
Since its inception in 2015, its growth has been exponential with 20 of the best teams from South Africa and Botswana participating in this year’s event. Next year’s tournament may be a two-day battles-royale with no fewer than 28 teams expected to participate. Spectator numbers were also significantly higher this year as opposed to previous years.
The VUT Softball men’s team was in scintillating form as usual beating BMC 7-0, Gata 1-0, VUT u/19 18-2, UL 9-1 and Bears 2-0. The final was a showdown between VUT and Tembisa Classic which saw VUT reign supreme over their opponents with an 11-1 victory. The women’s tournament was won by Police IX.
Team VUT, in a brilliant display of leadership, distributed 800 pink softball caps to the teams and spectators in support of the fight against cancer. R10 000 was donated to CANSA last year; hopefully this will increase in next year’s tournament and remain consistent.
VUT Sport and VUT Softball acknowledge and appreciate all the help received from all the internal and external donors without whom the event would not have been the resounding success it was.
