VUT FM management recently embarked on a strategic visit to the University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) campus on 27 March 2025, with the goal of fostering collaboration and supporting UWC’s uDubs Radio in their journey toward obtaining a broadcasting licence from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA).
Upon arrival, the VUT FM team received a warm welcome from the uDubs Radio staff, setting the tone for a productive engagement. The visit began with a brief tour of the UWC campus, offering insights into the institution’s vibrant student culture and media landscape. This was followed by a formal meeting where Mr Mxolisi Ndongeni, VUT FM’s Station Manager, shared valuable regulatory knowledge and operational strategies essential to running a successful radio station.
A key outcome of the visit was the planning of a series of online mentorship sessions, where VUT FM management will guide and support the uDubs Radio committee. These sessions are designed to equip the UWC team with the tools and insights needed to strengthen their campus radio operations and ultimately secure their broadcasting licence. Discussions also focused on broader collaboration goals, including best practices, content exchange, and building sustainable relationships between student radio platforms. The partnership is grounded in a shared commitment to empower student voices and foster media excellence across campuses.
UWC’s Student Representative Council (SRC) President, Mr McIntosh Khasembe, expressed his appreciation for the support, stating:
“It is an honour to have VUT FM come to inspire and help our station get to the level it needs to be. We hope this starts an ongoing working relationship that will benefit both parties.”
The visit underscored the importance of knowledge sharing and mutual support within the student radio community. Both stations are optimistic about the future and remain committed to building a dynamic and impactful collaboration that supports the growth of student media in South Africa.
